It's funny how when a sudden, salient disaster strikes, people are rushing to open up their wallets to help the poor victims, but you don't see any of the same people calling for donations to help the millions of people around the world who are living in conditions just as shitty 24/7/365.
Charity is masturbation.

Charity is masturbation.
People don't suffer if it's not shown on TV.

I should have clarified, I was referring to all those pop up charities that come out of the woodwork trying to do something nice by just stockpiling money. Giving money to a proper relief effort, like The Red Cross, that has the means to get that money to where it needs to go is different. I'm not totally heartless
On my way in to work the other day I saw lots of people selling shit (baked goods or whatever) with proceeds going to Japan. Seemed kind of silly.

A lot of people give to charities regularly and then additionally for these types of disasters. That said I agree with the last statement... Charity is all about making the giver feel good.

If this Japan quake has taught me anything, its time we start investing in Evangelion to pick up nuclear reactors whole and throw them into the sea and giant barriers that are 100ft tall that rise out of the sea to block tsunami...

Bas has a point though. Any kind of relief efforts after any kind of disaster should be focused on sustainability, and helping people regain their livelihoods. Which encompasses a fuckload more than just money.
Elaborate. What else is needed besides money to help people regain their livelihoods? Keep in mind that money rebuilds houses, pays for support staff and anything else you can think of.

Assuming that's true, it doesn't change the fact that it helps the people receiving the charity.
