Aside from supplying cars to our former soviet brothers (obviously ), what do you do for work?

Sometime in the new year, I'll be buying a car over here. It's purpose will be a long-range cruising weapon for roadtrips and such.

Therefore, if I can't find a cheap, high mileage BMW / Merc diesel, I want to find something heroically ugly.

Something like this (in diesel, and cheap)

Something super comfy (to the point of not being at all sporting) and something with massive milage. The uglier the better (again, if I can't get an old BMW diesel on the cheap)

I can rent a performance car to use at the Nurburgring (only 3 hours drive away - and my 35th birthday present to myself will be a track day there) so I don't need anything fast or flashy for normal vacation use. hell, it won't be driven very often either. I won't even drive it to and from work (I have a small motorbike for that)

Well, that citroen certainly matches the ugly and comfortable criteria...not to mention theres enough space in the back to carry around a small tanker ship. Its a bit terrible to drive but you can really only do one at a time, fantastic to drive or comfortable. Unless we are taking about american cars which are at the same time uncomfortable and terrible to drive. Quite a feat.

See, this is exactly it. I have a girlfriend and dog that will be with me on most roadtrips so space is important. Comfort is also important. Mileage is super kkey. Being able to carve corners is a non-issue.

This is something totally new for me given my history with cars (Mada MX5, Mazda 323GTX, 3x Mk1 Golf GTi's, Nissan NX2000). They're all quick, and sporty-ish with minimal comforts or space (though I always maintained that my Sparco seat in my MX5 was uber comfy, nobody else who drove it did...and I was able to haul a hilarious amount of shit in that car too).

Given that Citroen's have an apparently excellent ride, and in this case they more than surpass my space and ugly requirements, I'm hopeful to find something like this XM or even a newer Xantia.

My ideal would be a BMW E36 325TD wagon, but I'm not sure I can find one in my target price range.

What about a VW TDI of some sort? Pretty sure they sell Jetta TDI Wagons there.

Yeah but xantia is not anywhere near as ugly as the XM. I think the E36 325TD is a bit rare, dont remember the e36 wagon being a popular choice. In that regard perhaps an E34 525TD would be a better choice, a bit bigger, a bit uglier in base spec and the latter improved models are a bit cheaper than the 3er as well.
But then again with these old bmw, you have a feeling that unless youre going trough every corner sideways the car itself despises and mocks you.

Props for the Mk1 GTis

Yeah, this will likely be what I'll end up with.

For some reason though I really really want the ugly as fuck Citroen though.

Good points (I was probably incorrectly using the E36 label, but yeah, mid 90's 3 series beater).

If I could get the 525TD for the right price, I would snap it up for sure.

And I wouldn't really care that the car was mocking me. I kind of want to mock the car, hence my interest in the ugly French piece of shit

No, you used the E36 label correctly. E36 = 93.5-98.5 3er.
