well guys......i dont know how it is in montreal that well. But I know that in Toronto the Mnus show did not happen because mr hawtpants
just wanted to much money for this showcase, I spend alot of money on bookings but when a show costs so much and is not worth the risk it just cant work. A promoter should make money of an event so he can produce more not spend his whole life making money for other artists
and just doing parties for the hell of it.
Even in Toronto (we have quite alot of techno events) but a mnus showcase just wont work. Because at max we would maybe get 700 people out for a show that costs 25 000 just for the booking.
So guys I dont think you have it too bad in Montreal. Piknic alone is very special event that hardly any other city has something like that.
Its too bad that you couldn't have pulled this off. I don't think that $25,000 seems like too much but you know the market much better than I do. I would easily have paid $50+ for this event (that's what its going for in Europe). I would like to think that there would have been more than 1000 people that would have showed up for it since when I have seen Richie elsewhere there are always people who travel long distances for him.
It is sad that Chicago could throw one of these events and we here can't.
This does leave me more confused and wondering who you are bringing in January if it isn't a M_NUS showcase of Contakt show. Sven? Ricardo? Circoloco?

Ditto, as long as it would be for someone who hasn't been here in a few years (or ever) and who can throw down a mighty set.
I'm getting a bit bored of the 4-6 notable techno DJ's who are cycled through Toronto on a yearly basis. Styles and playlists don't change that much in a year...so why not bring someone new by spending a bit more money, asking for a bit more money on tickets, and making a night worth talking about?
Makes business sense to me (and you don't have to be a promoter to know that true fans - and there are enough of them by this point - will pay more for a quality product).

Really enjoyed the Murcof one, first time really listening to a set of his actually. Nice and mellow, some really nice stuff in there.
Giving the Pansonic one a listen now, hrmmm...interesting wont be for everyone.

The problem is convincing a critical mass of people that the lesser known DJ you're bringing in is indeed "quality" and will "throw down a mighty set." It's always a trade off.

Possible way to solve problem:
- Bring in 1 big-name DJ
- Bring in 1 lesser known DJ
- Put in 1 killer local (and give them a slightly longer set)
Instead of
- Bring in 1 big-name DJ
- Pad lineup with 2-4 local DJs
The big-name gets the draw so the party is a 'success', the lesser known DJ gets exposed to Toronto, and hopefully eventually will be a big enough draw on their own to pull a crowd.
