Who uses CD's anymore?

Live PA - I like this guy, he produces some interesting stuff, not your typical minimal techno. Bit funky/quirky, a few strange head-scratching tangents, to some chunky chuggy stuff with housier moments mixed in for good measure.

huh - so 10 tracks in 74 minutes?!... that is guaranteed to be a bore in some places

Good tech dj's typically mix a MINIMUM average of 15-16 tracks per hour (there are exceptions of course - some tracks need to play longer)
Techno is made to be layered!

enjoyed that last group of sets! Much appreciated.

Np man. If you liked that make sure to check the TECHNOMAFIA mix below, its bonkers, really.

TECHNOMAFIA (Spartaque & Slava Flash) LIVE @ GLOBAL GATHERING UKRAINE JULY 2009
Wow this is like on par with my fav. Spektre live pa sets, very serious business.
TECHNOMAFIA is a new live project of popular Ukrainian Djs Spartaque and Slava Flash in which they only play their own tunes. This set is the first of the project, live recording from Global Gathering Ukraine. The guys claim to spend loads of time in studio now so each of the future performances will be unique and exclusive. Actually tomorrow they will be playing their second performance at the opening of Kazantip, so hoping another massive set will surface soon (hopefully including the new massive Twisted Sound - Jolly (Spartaque Remix)). As for this set it is really loaded with bombs, esp. my picks are fake crisis, peace, openair silence (the anthem of this years Global Gathering) and spoon bait which recently came out on Umek's 1605.

Style: Harder/Groovy Minimal Techno
Tracklist:
01.Spartaque - Fake Crisis
02.Spartaque - Crush Dummy
03.Spartaque - Freshener
04.Slava Flash - Thriller
05.Depeche Mode - Peace (Spartaque Private Dub)
06.Slava Flash & Spartaque - Openair Silence
07.Slava Flash - Criminal Girls
08.Stereo Seven Plus - Hitchcock (Spartaque Remix)
09.Spartaque - Spoon Bait

Next two of my new mixes. I know there is a promo thread, but it is not a regular promo thing, and neither is a typical sorta thing you would usually find online, both are actually really good themed mixes and will be of interest to ppl reading this topic. One is a clown mix, called clowns sniffing glue, which includes clown and circus themed punchy minimal techno and the other one, called getting lost in time, is a mix featuring a mix of upfront minimal, trippy acapellas and mashups with classic trance tunes for those who used to listen to trance back in the day and has converted to techno ).

Vanos - Getting Lost In Time (July 2009)
Tracklist:
1. Chris Zander - Lord of Sunshine (Christian Hornbostel Remix) (Intro Acapella)
2. Monoxide - Water Baloon
3. Angy Kore, Paul Ursin - Fuck You
4. Cedar M - Stupid Winter - Modern Classic - incl. Creamer & K - Forget The World (Acapella)
5. Mini Mode vs. Tiesto - Afrikan Bassta Works In Lethal Industry (Vanos Live Mash Up)
6. MCJ - Bicicletta
7. Alex Verrina, Gherrardo - Haunted Ship incl. 3 Drives On A Vinyl - Greece 2000 (Matt Samuel's Remix)
and Meet Her At The Loveparade 2001 (Hooligan's Club Mix) teases
8. Maurizio Benedetta & Sunthic Genius vs Detsl, Smith & Pimenov- Legalize The Trumpet! (Vanos Live Mash Up)
9. Swallen - Monotechno
10. Worakls - Couch
11. Richard Dinsdale vs. Creamer & K - Forget The World As The Record Spins (Schadenfreude Remix)

What's with all these 10 track "promo" mixes???

Usually promo mixes are about that length. Sometimes I find those really long ones, but the industry standard is one hr. And im sure they all know how to mix. And i actually had a discussion on another forum about this with someone just a few days ago. Usually most promomixes are mixed rather regularly without any fancy stuff and usually the full tracks are played in them. As far as I understand the main purpose of a promo mix is to showcase what is currently in the "bag" and not the fancy live action, hence you have 10 track, 1hr promomixes mixed in the ends. What they play live is another story I am sure none of them or very few play 10 tracks an hour. Usually like you said it would be more like 15 or so tracks an hour for an average set. However it depends on a situation and on the dj, i heard a recent set from harder minimal papa, umek, and he played 20+ tracks in one hr and sometimes i hear live sets with half that amount and they still sound good. It all depends.
But regarding getting bored as you mentioned, ye i agree that if its a 74 hr mix with 10 tracks it has awfully long "bare" transitions which is not fun. However Typicaly it would be something like 10-12 tracks in 50-60 minutes, which is another talk. Check out this Ahmet Sendil June Promo Mix (its not the same as was posted before), it has 10 tracks and is about an hour long but all the transitions are not boring and are very very clean. Just an example of not boring transitions, and imo a really great example of what promomixes are all about and just a spotless mix in general.

Ahmet Sendil June 09 Promo Mix
Tracklist:
1- Ahmet Sendil & Ricky Stone - Worst Case Scenario - Ricky Stone Mix
2- Alex Young - Kinigreich Wind - Original Mix
3- Alex Moreno - Underground Disco - Emrah Celik Remix
4- Tocadisco - Too Many Shots Of Jaegermeister - Ahmet Sendil Remix
5- Stan Kolev & Dj Lion - Metlata - Nikitin & Semikashev Remix
6- Hermanez - Blister - Spektre Remix
7- Andrea Roma & Alberto Fracasso - Sorority - Original Mix
8- Mike Spaccavento - Unberable Piano - Alex Di Stefano Remix
9- Citizen Kain & Phuture Traxx - Tan Guapa - Abnormal Boyz Remix
10-M.I.D.I. - Minimal Funk - Alex Di Stefano Remix

Please, I mix in that many tracks in a half hour - what's wrong with you, you have arthritis or something? And what about these so-called Techno DJs (who from what I can hear are actually playing minimal House) who only use 2 decks, or supposedly use "multiple decks" on a laptop that beatmatches everything for them = lame.

(but really, who give a FF how many tracks you mix - as long as it sounds good coming out of the speakers)

Awesome interview with Detroit vet Eric Dulan, a.k.a. DJ Bone.

In other news, there's going to be a serious Detroit shakedown going on at the Basement on August 15. Alan Oldham, a.k.a. DJ T-1000 (who as far as I can recall hasn't been to Toronto in ages), Antwon "Twonz" Faulkner and Derrick "Dez" Ramirez, who used to run the killer Detor events back in the 90s.

Mr. Oldham's schedule also has him penned in at "The Beach, Toronto" for August 16, and seeing as Promise is assisting with the promo, I think it's pretty easy to determine what that means...

Glad to see that Detroit is staking it's claim in this city again - we're long due for a fresh injection of Motor City talent.

How is that lame???? Lame is if you use the laptop without any gain in artistism and productivity so to say compared to vinyls/cdjs. IMO the future of djing is leaving beatmatching to the computer and focusing on live action. Plus on the computer you can actually see the soundwaves which makes it easier and allows you to better decide where to mix in or layer a loop. When beatmatching is taken care of you have more time for using tools, mixing on 3-4 (shit 4 deks is hardcore lol, i usually dont use more than 3) decks, doing tricks and doing live action with your percussion and fx controllers (the most important and artistic part).
I mean imo, you can argue something for using vinyls, because the sound they produce is slightly different (not better quality but different) but that and cool looks (which is important too actually) are about all the benefits you receive, and there are too many downsides that in the end make your mix much more simplistic. and cdjs imo, give you no benefits at all really, in 10 or so years imo they are probably going to die out.

fa-ce-tious

please note the "as long as it sounds good coming out of the speakers" portion of my post.

but seriously, I am beyond tired of the whole minimal ping-pong sound, regardless of how many decks it's being mixed on - that DJ Bone interview echoes my feelings on the matter quite nicely.

oh i c i didnt make sense out of it then.
on the sidenote I read that interview with Dj Bone, and got an impression that the guy is a really ignorant fuck in many aspects and kinda lives in a box in his own little world. The interviewer was pretty lame too imo. But still an interesting read, cause its always interesting to see the various perspectives.

Of course we all have our blind spots, but he raises many valid points based on a wealth of personal experience.

You should listen to his set from The Shelter, that accompanies the interview.
