If you can't even apply to a job without taking the time to make no mistakes, you most likely work half assed as well.

I was assuming this was a hypothetical situation where they were privy to your ability. If you make a mistake on your resume or cover letter, you better be really special for me to overlook that because that isn't so much a lack of knowledge as it is a lack of caring about details. Most people have some idea of how they write and if you know you suck, you get someone to proof read it.

I've put some thought into why my writing say on a message board is often atrocious yet i am able to write rather well in an academic or formal setting. I think that i approach writing much differently depending on the situation. The nature of my work in many ways involves a process where you try to spit out your thoughts and then edit them afterwords. I think this translates to writing. I just don't do the editing part. I mean you see edits but they are usually things I add, not correct. It is pretty hard for me to just write properly without having to go back and structure things and edit the mistakes. I think you need to practice writing to be able to do that well. But language has always been that one thing I have to work at. It isn't something that will just improve from reading. I read alot. So i can recognize bad writing and that is usually the process i would apply after the fact. But ya, i would never be able to write anything that was not a mess without having to go back and edit. I think this is more a indication of how your mind operates. I know mine is very non linear which is great for creativity but not so great for other things.

My proven ability to write well trumped my shitty cover letter and resume for a writing and editing gig I just landed with a book publisher.

A lot of the other applicants had Masters Degrees, 10+ years of experience and much better qualifications for the job. I mean, the guy who hired me (who once did cover letters and resumes for company execs in a previous job) said my cover letter and resume were shit.

"If I were going by just those two things, you wouldn't have even gotten an interview."

Ouch.

The cool thing about this criticism is that he took the time to go over my cover letter and resume and told me what to change for the next time I'm applying for jobs. What a difference.

Anyways, on topic, my ability to write well was the deciding factor in me getting this job.

I'm glad I attached my work samples with my email to go along with my resume and cover letter. The ad didn't even ask for samples, but thanks to my instinct I did it anyways.

Maybe the other candidates were over qualified and as a result wanted more money than they could afford so they choose you. Irreguardless congrats.
