I didn't even know Kessel went 5th overall, but thats pretty good. As far as I'm concerned Kessel IS the 1st round pick of next years draft. He's playing great, and he's only 22 years old, and already an established NHL forward. Yes, they gave up a lot, but they got a lot as well, and who knows who they would have gotten in next years draft, could be a dud, you never know, but with Kessel they got a bonafide goal scorer. Give them some time, they'll be a good team, in the next 2 years, they're already playing better. Gustavsson is a key component too.

Seems like in the past they would do that and acquire a veteran after they had a good year, at least with Kessel hes a young dynamic player and already making an impact on the team.

as long as he doesn't play Boston he is an impact player....he was terrible in all three games against them.

i don't see how you guys can complain about kessel. The team has been on fire since his return. He is a one dimensional player for sure, but everyone already knew that.

He may be an established NHLer but he is far from a star NHLer. He really hasn't proven anything yet. He had one season with 60 points, which happened to be a contract year. There are superstars stars and above average players....I would say he falls in the above average player category. If he can maintain a point a game average then you could bump him up to the star category but he will never be a superstar. I just don't think giving up that much for an above average player is really worth it. I would rather keep the two first round picks and develop those players then have Kessel for five years and him leaving afterwards. I don't really see the Leafs being a cup contender in five years.

and as seen in the Boston games he is easily shut down. He is not a hard player to shut down...any first line defenceman could shut him down. I think you will find more teams just shadowing Kessel and making it impossible for him to take his snap shot....the only shot he apparently knows how to use.

You know why I like Kessel? Because he shoots nearly every time he gets control of the puck.

That it what happens when you really only have one good line.

there is a big difference between taking quality shots and just shooting it because you don't know what else to do with it.

Toronto has pretty balanced scoring on the top two lines. The biggest thing I've noticed since Kessel has been in the line up is players trying to hard to get him the puck. When the teams shut him down the other players look lost now.
