Departures is an excellent film, which depicts the life of a failed cellist who, after losing his job at a philharmonic, desperately turns to work as the apprentice of a local mortician, which leads to all sorts of hilarity.

I managed to catch a screening of it in theaters, when it was first released. If I'm not mistaken, it's the first Japanese film to win an Academy Award. It's a bit of a tear-jerker, but has plenty of comical moments throughout. Definitely worth checking out.

This didn't really resonate with me when I first saw it, but I've thought about it occasionally since then. Because of that, I've come to regard it as a really good movie. It touched me in the same way a few other japanese movies have: The Twilight Samurai, for instance.

Hi there,
I never got to see this spanish film you talk about, though I know a handful of acquaintances and friends who did.

If you're ever looking for an alternative, a fairly decent choice could be:

quote:

Abre los ojos (English: Open Your Eyes) is a 1997 Spanish film directed by Alejandro Amenábar which was written by himself and Mateo Gil. It stars Eduardo Noriega, Penélope Cruz, Fele Martínez and Najwa Nimri. In 2002, Open Your Eyes was ranked #84 in the Top 100 Sci-Fi List by the Online Film Critics Society.

Watched Chronicle, was surprisingly good. Blair witch project style camera views.
Highly recommend this movie.

Old School was also a great flick, a must for Will Ferrell fans. Its from 2003 so most of you may have seen it.

Samsara is a nonverbal film described by the makers as a "guided meditation". The film uses very high quality images, scenes of nature and mankind to stimulate the viewer. The film contains no plot or actors, although there are several performers in the film. Samsara is Ron Fricke's 2011 follow-up to Baraka.

Current status: The theatrical release of Samsara will be in August 2012 and will at various theatres across the US. Samsara's World Premier screening was at the Toronto International Film Festival on Sept. 11, 2011. The team are currently arranging further showings. Baraka being as amazing as it is, this should be downright stunning.

Anyone living in LA should go to LACMA this friday to see Kiss Me Deadly, also available on criterion blue ray. The film noir to end all film noirs, that depicts the end of the world in a briefcase (que Tarantino steals all his material from older movies line) with the sleaziest mike hammer ever shot in black and white. From the opening credits, which run upside down, to one of the most famous endings in film noir history, Kiss Me Deadly oozes hysteria, desperation, and the perversity of the modern amoral world.
