Just a wildcard for the leafs, kaberle moved out along with kulimen or finger and luke schenn and bobby ryan/getzlaf to toronto.
Could be wrong but rumors are somewhat interesting for the leafs. I was expecting sharp from chicago to come here but he re signed.
Leafs will look interesting the next week...

Come on guys, give your heads a shake.
Stalberg and Versteeg are the meat of the deal as the remainders are long shots of equal stature.
Stalberg has the higher offensive upside and is in the last yr of his ELC, while Versteeg is $3mil.
I like Versteeg, he's a complete player and will eat up PK time.
However he's doubtful to regularly top 60pts, which is what I think Stalberg will become.
This deal will take a few yrs to shake out, but considering how little cash Toronto has to throw around until they lose a defenceman or 3, and how much we need top tier offensive talent, you guys should really hold off on thinking this is a home run.
Any time Burke seems to make a move, too many of you fanboys yell WOOHOO AWESOME.
This trade doesn't warrant it as it's a minor upgrade over Stalberg in 2010 and potentially a downgrade longterm.

Moments like this are when I hate being a Leaf fan.
Getzlaf is a franchise cornerstone signed well under market for a few yrs. Ryan is an RFA and since we can't give him an offer sheet and have nothing to offer in the way of young assets to trade (picks or NHL ready talent) Toronto won't get him.
As for Sharp, he resigned in Chicago all right...2 offseasons ago.
Don't say that's what you meant btw, since he was coming off his ELC and only had 35pts as a rookie @ the time of the signing.

Its not a big name deal but I would take Versteeg over Stalberg any day of the week. Stalberg has never topped 60 pts at any level he's played at so I don't know why you would think he has that potential. Stalberg is a good third liner.
Versteeg is a talented offensive player but on a legit contender he is nothing more then a third liner who will get top 6 time if someone gets hurt. On the leafs he will be a top 6 guy unless the leafs do some dealing before the season starts.
I definitely think the leafs got the better end of the deal at this point but both players are still developing.

both being the same age versteeg has a log more experience and doesnt need as much development as stalberg. he already has his ball rolling while stalberg needs players around him to lead before he starts blooming. leafs did something really good with this trade.
i dont know too much about the prospects we gave up but from what i read they were exciting to see develop in the system with great potential.

Your last part is the best way to look @ things, but Stalberg is definitely the better offensive potential out of the two.
You realize though that Stalberg was an NCAA prospect. They only play around 40games depending on what division they are in it's usually in the mid 30s. So your "never hit 60pt" comment is essentially worthless as that's out of context to where he's been playing.
You need to look @ a prospects production compared to the age group around them and the league. The WHL is much different than the QMJHL. The SEL and KHL have top end kids rarely surpassing 20pts in 60games.
So an prospect in the NCAA that puts up 35pts or better is tabbed for potentially an offensive career @ the NHL level. Stalberg for example was 46pts in 39gms in his 3rd yr. He then made the jump to the AHL and right away was almost a PPG.
He's jumped levels really quickly which is why he leapfrogged right into the NHL last yr, and impressed before he got hurt and then he stalled.
Now using minors production for Versteeg, he is a WHL product. WHL talents that are expected to produce top 6 numbers @ the NHL level should produce well over a PPG and score between 30/40 goals @ that level ideally.
He has scored 20 goals, but that's barely 3rd liner numbers. He's a complete player who's offence may have been a result of his linemates and 2nd team PP time in CHI. He has 2 seasons and change on Stalberg so he might outproduce him in the short term, but in 3 yrs this can look very, very bad for Toronto.
Versteeg is far and away no Patrick Sharp who is a 60pt+ player with great two way skills.

I think the signing of Lebda just confirms that Kaberle will be gone shortly. I could see Kaberle going to the Ducks or Boston.

I definitely think there is something fairly big in the works to bring a solid first line playmaker to the leafs. The leafs need another sniper and at least one playmaker to play on the top two lines.

Playmaker and a solid centreman indeed. Right now Burke is setting up the pins for a blockbuster trade probably to the calibre of Phaneuf's.
I knew we woulnd't do anything entirely huge on July 1st, although I do believe most of the changes are done... with one large one that will happen within the next 2 weeks. Although I'm fairly excited, I would like Kaberle to stay.
LOL @ Kovalchuk who can't seem to sign with anyone. The league must think he's the biggest idiot and most difficult to deal with aside from Heatley. Although Heatley isn't as stubborn or demanding as Ilya.
BTW ive been hearing something about jeff carter for.....
