Burke can trade some players but the most he will get for any player is a second round pick...and even that is unlikely in most cases. Even if he piles up the second round picks very few ever make the NHL...so he will basically be building up a Toronto Marlies team that will consist of players that can do short stints on the third line in the NHL. In less then a year Burke has basically stalled the development of the team for the next 3 years. In this day and age you cannot rely on free agency to build a team. Most NHLers don't want to go to a rebuilding team...they want to go to a team that stands a chance at winning the cup. Most big name free agents want very lengthy contracts and burke won't do any contract over 5 years.
Boston might get really lucky and get two first overall draft picks for Kessel....if that happens burke will go down as the dumbest GM in Sports History

The Leafs can't be competitive for at least 7-8 years...three years is just how long we have to wait until we can start the rebuilding process...assuming burke doesn't do any further harm.
The only real prospects that I can see are Jerry D'Amigo, Nazem Kadri, Kenny Ryan, Jimmy Hayes, and Jesse Blacker but they are still young so they have a lot of growing to do. The leafs also have a bunch of university guys they signed last year but its been shown that very few players that get signed out of university ever develop into anything. Considering they would have gone through 3 drafts without getting drafted tells you they probably won't develop any more then what you already see. When burke signed all these university guys and said they were like first round picks I laughed and knew from there on he must be smoking some shitty crack.

i know all to well about the university players. We drafted Louis Leblanc with our first round pick this year, even though we knew he was going to finish his degree at Harvard.
There is some positive to that, as when you play in a hockey crazy market, having a good head on your shoulders helps immensely to deal with the media.
I'm not worried about him not making the nhl, as he is having a great seaon with the Crimson and is a blue chiper for sure.
I'm starting to agree with you, ChemEnhanced, especially after reading your last few posts.

I am passionate but realistic when it comes to the leafs.

my team ain't exactly hot shit either this year
i still think they will squeak in, but unless they pick up another power forward they will exit the first round faster than you can say fuck you bruins
maybe i'll be lucky and the bruins will trade one of those first rounders to make up for the total lack of depth due to injuries.
Impressive win by the leafs tonight and a really good game by Kessel. For once kessel was actually thinking when he got the puck and not just making a B-line for the circle and shooting. If Kessel plays more games like that then the scoring will come back....he's been too focused on trying to score instead of looking to develop a play.

one game i watch and it's a great one. we were finally catching some breaks and bounces. and it felt that all lines were putting in an effort.
