Car repair advice (broken rim)

So I hit the curb at a pretty good speed, and, well, just take a look:

I assume this isn't safe to drive on and needs to be replaced, right? Judging by what I've read so far, I don't think it is repairable.

Also, the other wheel has some scuffing on the edge from the curb. its the same thing as below, just minus the broken-ness

Is this simply superficial and no cause for alarm? Should I have it looked at by someone qualified? Can anyone give any thoughts on THIS procedure for repairing the "curb rash" ?

I should probably post this on a car forum.. not TA, but w/e. Thanks

thats a new rim , it probably will keep deflating your tyres as it gets bigger as you keep driving it on that wheel

You have a fucked rim? (lolololol)

Wheel is cracked, wouldn't risk it. It's not just "rim rash" there is visible damage.

PS:£="rim rash"

If you are in the north, perhaps you could consider getting all season or winter tires- and a set of new rims - or a replacement - then in the summer you could either continue using the allseasons or get a new warm weather pair, keep the set around encase you need another. Replacing a single tire is a bad idea as it can put your car out of algnment, cause faster tire wear etc...

What does it feel like when you are driving it. A little scuffing is superficial but if you damaged the mechanics at all then it could be an issue. I'm not a certified mechanic so I don't know for sure.

My best advice is to go buy a SHITTY pair of rims (read: steelies (the kind that are all steel they put hub caps on)) and use those for winter. Get a new wheel to replace that broken one, put summer tires on those, and only use those during summer.

Thanks for the advice. I live in florida, so i have no need for summer and winter tires. So thats out of the question. And also, I was referring to the rim rash on the back tire, cause i rubbed up on the curb pretty good and wanted to know if anyone has ever tried to fix it themselves by sanding and repainting. I think the tire is fine, I've been keeping an eye on it and measuring the air pressure and it hasnt changed, but that doesn't mean it won't.

Don't take any chances. Get that looked at right away. The last thing you want is for that baby to give out at 80mph on the interstate or something.

And a huge crack/dent in the wheel won't? The wheel will be totally out of balance for a start. (when you take it up to speed it'll judder right?)

But most importantly think about what the rim of the wheel is there for. When you go round a corner at speed you load them up as the tires hold against the road and the car tries to pull the other way. The crack tells me the integrity of the rim (of the wheel) is not as strong as it was designed for hence is a risk.

A tyre is at a fair old pressure for a start pushing against that. Then put corner loading on top. And you see why there might be a risk of the tyre popping off the rim in a corner as the rim deforms (due to reduced integrity). Dropping your nice rubbery tyre off and planting a nice metal anchor in the form of the wheel into the ground instead. At speed and mid corner = not a great idea.

Well in that case, hit up a local junk yard and find a good condition rim of the same year for your car. That rim is well fucked. The crack in that face is a sign of worse damage than you can fix. It is not fixable.
