A similar thing happened to my bf at the grocery store. He was using the self check out and noticed when he left that he had much much more money in change than he knew he was supposed to have. Realizing that the person before him obviously forgot to take their change, he went back to the store and gave it to one of the clerks.

I believe it's a lot more common than we imagine, and I'm quite sure many more people around here would do that as well. The reason, I believe, why we think this is rare is simply because bad behaviour tends to be more shocking and thus gets more attention.
