thats how you play football without all this bullshit :
quote:
Euro 2012 co-hosts Ukraine faced a boycott over its record on democracy and human rights on Monday while Poland braced itself for a planned march by about 5,000 Russian fans through Warsaw.
On the pitch, Spain and Portugal came up with excuses after failing to win their opening matches, the holders blaming a dry pitch and their Iberian neighbors an uncooperative ball.
Sweden, which has been sharply critical of the prosecution and jailing of former prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko, said it was not sending any government ministers to their Group D match against the home side at Kiev's Olympic stadium (1845 GMT).
England and France, Sweden's European Union allies, were due to play in Ukraine's eastern city of Donetsk (1600) without any of their government officials present in a snub to President Viktor Yanukovich.
All three countries will be represented by ambassadors.
The opening match for Ukraine will bring some cheer to the soccer-mad former Soviet republic whose image has been hurt by bad publicity over the Tymoshenko case and racism allegations.
Sports Minister Borys Kolesnikov on Monday exhorted Ukrainians to hang national flags from their windows and trail streamers from their cars to boost the national side, ranked a modest 52nd in the world.
what these c unts dont understand is very simple...its soccer, its the second most important thing in the world, its pure and awesome. leave the politics for some other time and enjoy, you soulless pieces of shit.

don't really like how the russian fans are being portrayed as victims. both sides were not sensitive and sportsmanlike.

I wouldn't worry about it. I think people understand that its a tense situation and even the slightest trigger would set things off.
The Russian fans should have been a little more sensitive IMO. Yes, its a national holiday in Russia today, but a 5000 person strong parade procession through the capitol city of a country that you oppressed for 40+ years isn't necessarily the smartest move. And it goes both ways, the Polish fans were well aware this was going to happen today and shouldn't have played into it the way they did. It's a black eye on both imo.

LOL
So did Nazi Germany, but you won't see anyone forget about that anytime soon. Most people have no problem separating football from a political &/or historical context, but like everything else, you have a few bad seeds that ruin it for the bunch. Like you said earlier I believe, some European attitudes are somewhat closed off, especially in poorer eastern countries and those that comprised the iron curtain. Some people are still bitter, and nationalism runs deep. For some, these tournaments are nothing more than an opportunity to take out their frustrations and exercise an unhealthy amount of ignorance. It's the sad truth.
