'nor has it ever been referred to as such' was an over statement, of course it's been called that, but the 'God Particle' is nothing more than a media spin, it's not called that in particle physics. Physicists don't really use the term. Except perhaps when confronted by the aforementioned media, to make the Higgs Boson sound more interesting to the people who have no fucking idea what it is.

EDIT - What you posted is a good example, a book with 'God Particle' in the title is certainly going to draw more attention to it than one with 'Higgs Boson' in the title.
