Rant time

This place is nearly as dead as the Trance scene in Texas, but what the hell. Maybe someone might take notice of what a long-time Trance fan and event-goer has to say about the way things are in Texas (mostly Houston). So here goes.

Screw the promoters in Texas. You guys suck. Sole reason I came here was to see if there were any events that I could go to, but obviously you don't want to book anyone and don't want to listen to the people tha have kept you alive this long. I honestly don't know how you stay in business and it would explain the mess that Rich's got into.

Stereo live blows. The AC apparently never works, the sound system is so weak that you can't hear it over the massive air cannons. The lack of trash cans makes trying to walk anywhere on the dance floor an obstacle course (I'm surprised the Fire Marshall hasn't said anything about this). The lights are in your face all the damn time. Apparently your version "lights" is just to turn them on seizure mode randomly. You can't see shit when you unload those stupid air cannons. The parking is fucking retarded (was asked to pay $20 at Armin, which is nearly as much as the god damn ticket).

With all that being said, I have decided to not support Insomniac (decided that a while back) or NightCulture/Disco Donnie. I will not be attending any events no matter the artist until you decide you want to fix your numerous problems and become a real organization that has the goal of giving the customer the best experience they can get.

I could go on about more, but I shall not.

TL;DR: Texas promoters/venues need to get their fucking acts together.

This is basically why I havn't been to any sort of event in a few years.

Besides all the problems you mention with the actual venues, I think the problem is peoples tastes in Houston. The promoters don't book any upcoming/underground talent because no one is going to go to these shows. The question is why don't they take a chance on someone up and coming now and then, or is the entire scene here too obsessed with the DJ mag top 100 to see anyone else?

If you don't keep at least part of your bookings fresh people are not going to keep showing up. Sure, you may get some people completely new to the scene coming in to fill the gaps, but they will leave after a couple years because all the acts being booked are just skin deep when it comes to the EDM scene. This kind of promoting is not good for the health of the scene or the music long term.

You get the same recycled DJ top 100 trance acts over and over again. People staying in the scene maybe 2-3 years and then saying goodbye EDM.

I want a cutting edge musical experience not some stupid DJ worship popularity contest. As far as I am concerned trance/prog house is pretty much dead anyway in most of the USA.

I feel the same way in Phoenix. The promoters here do bring a trance DJ every two months or so, but it's seriously like 5 people that even go to the events. Then they bring Avicii, Calvin Harris, or a dubstep DJ and the warehouse/club is completely slammed. I think the problem here is everyone is way to mainstream, and right now trance isn't mainstream at all.

I think the only US city that has a stable trance market is LA to be honest. I actually see DJ's going through there that never play any where else in the US. Thankfully I am moving there in a month, so the terrible Phoenix scene wont be an issue for me anymore.

Its funny though, the big trance acts are trying SO HARD to be mainstream nowdays but they are failing to make any impact in the US compared to the big names in dubstep. They should have stuck with their underground roots instead of selling out and slowly strangling all life from the trance scene. T.nu died, Trance Energy is now just called energy... Trance is definitely on the decline and if the trend continues you wont even see the big trance jocks being booked globally anymore.

I hear they got alot of underground talent in LA, I envy you.

Its the big names in dance music that bring people into the scene these days and the underground that keeps people there (IMO).

Not sure I'd blame all promoters. When other promoters get told that they can't bring certain artists or have certain nights (such as Saturday's) in the limited venues we have in Texas because a certain promoter will pull all of their shows from the venue, it makes it difficult to have a thriving EDM scene. Only state in the country where there aren't multiple promoters working together and not against each other to keep the music flowing.

It's always about the $ as the bottom line. Dumbstep and cheesEDM bring in a ton of $ and that is what they are in business for. They don't care that our trance music is going to the wayside because the times have changed in our state and scene...
