I want to begin uploading some songs to my soundcloud and youtube account but I did a quick google and it seems like people can just take songs from any site these days no matter what, there's all sorts of "rip" programs available.
Is it inevitable these days, and to a point, accepted (in defeat), that if you upload a song pretty much anywhere on the net it can be taken without permission?
Personally I prefer to buy the cd from a shop, I like to get the artwork, etc. I have only ever purchased music online once which im sure with time will change!

I'm not worried in someone downloading my music for free to listen to. The fact that some people might download it and pass it on as their own work is what worries me more. So I guess the trick is to suck so bad, no one wants to download or present your music as their own.

To make your track less desirable to pirate, try to variate the bpm, to make the life a hell to all the DJ wanna be 14 yr olds, add some distortions or noises randomly, or.. just post the track at 60kbs or in mono. This shall keep the tune hoarders away, if somebody will really like your track will buy it anyway.

The reasons in the OP is what make Spotify so much fun. Downloading your favourite music to your computer at no cost .

Exactly the wrong thought. Without a proper impression of the quality product itself they wouldn't buy either. Welcome to the entertainment industry dilemma.
The only way for people to start paying is to offer them something they really like . Not a half ass product. To make things even worse: without an audience you're nowhere to begin with. No audience, no income. With a crap quality track preview nobody knows what they're getting into and nobody will buy. Neither will you gain audience/fans. Only when you've got a siginificant amount of fans/users/audience coming in you can start making money.
If you want security you simply don't share your music. Bits and bytes are made to be copied, no matter where you put them. So either take things as they are and find a way you don't have to worry about securing your music and can profit from it.

And if you are scared of people copying/ripping your tracks from net because you think you'll get rich by your music... stop dreaming and get a job.

If someone is desperate or stupid enough to rip your stuff off youtube/soundcloud he's never, ever going to buy your stuff so it's not really something to worry about.

What's the point? Someone that ripps stuff off soundcloud isn't going to give a shit about quality. I don't see the point unless you somehow get enjoyment out of people having your music in lesser quality.
