I think its less of an issue of compression and more of an issue with listening devices these days. Laptop speakers, crappy earbuds, Beats, etc.
Gone for the most part are the days of <= 128kbps mp3 files being common. Everyone is on 256kbps+... I personally can't tell any difference between 320kbps/high quality VBR and FLAC/WAV for the vast majority of tracks... That's with a low SNR sound card and mid range Sennheiser PC 360 headphones. Maybe you need thousands of dollars of preamps and headphones to tell the difference, its just not worth it to me personally as it already sounds fantastic to me vs some shitty earbuds or beats. |
But then again...what type of music are you listening to? If it's mainly electronic..yea, it sounds pretty decent. But if it's using analog instruments, today's music sounds like shit.
