I always found it funny how any track/artist that rides the line of prog house/trance/techno will rarely, EVER, have the word trance mentioned. It is still as dirty a word as ever.
From a recent mailer:
Melodic Techno:
"new wave of techno full of emotional journeys and deep percussive themes"
"reverberating hi-hats and snares".... "the tension building track".... "journeys through waves of effects and striking synths"

Melodic techno is indeed very popular nowadays, but it shouldn't be confused with trance, because it isn't. It's still techno - simply infused with synths/melodies. Many melodic techno producers also produce straightforward techno and are known as simply 'techno' producers and djs, without playing or producing a single prog/trance track.

I hear ya, Swamper, I've seen the looks on people's faces who make the funniest sour face when you approach them and say a melodic techno track sounds like trance in fear of not appearing cool. Although they do sound similar in melodic structure the rhythmic variation is what makes it techno. But I agree, it definitely sounds closer to the early 90s stuff than any actual modern trance producers are making. It was all a married sound then, house/trance/techno/acid now everything has to be defined and categorized with eight hundred sub genres.

Trance music today is at a point. Where it doesn't sound like the trance music that I remember. Today's so called trance sounds more like commercial EDM. It sounds very predictable and unoriginal.
Its one of the reason why I been listening to more Progressive House, Deep Tech, and Techno. a lot of those Genre do have trancy sounds sometimes. I remember when Trance was more techy and hypnotic back in the days.
