I have to say, Baumel is a logical choice for a new GU entry that keeps the series feeling modern without alienating long-standing fans. The guy has worked like an absolute bastard in the year or two to go up a notch in terms of profile. He seems to be playing everywhere at the moment, all the time. He sits well on a lot of prog line-ups alongside the likes of Guy J and Nick Warren, and he’s also a regular with the uber-popular Afterlife gang, and the the Kompakt gang. I’m a really big fan – I love the way he mixes in unashamed progressive house with cutting edge tech house and abstract techno. He has a supremely clinical mixing style as well. I saw him at Fabric in the summer and it was kind of set John Digweed wishes he could still play: dark, razor-sharp and explosive in the closing act.
I suppose it’s a bit weird for them to finally do Berlin and pick an artist who isn’t really associated with the city or its sound, but then GU isn’t a very Berlin series to begin with. I can’t imagine any of the Berghain residents ever wanting to put their name alongside Global Underground.
will have to check this out. I gotta be honest, ive listened to his sets and they don't do much for me. would really like to see him live though to see how he plays at a rave

I'm a bit baffled by that decision
Perhaps a marketing ploy to capitalize on Berlin's popularity and attract new listeners to the series? But why pick Baumel, then?
I'm also not a huge fan of the sets I've heard of his online, but I'll give this a go when it drops.
BTW, that cover is crap Now I'm not so baffled.

Ugh, he's playing tomorrow at an event by the same people who did that Lee Burridge night we were at recently, Jack, and I really want to go, but unfortunately already have plans. A friend is going and will definitely rub it in next time I see them
I still maintain that a lot of his productions/remixes all have the same effects, like Quivver used to have, which I find slightly uninspired, but he's a damned good DJ, imo. I look forward to this release.

Guys what do you think is his best set for me to listen to? Only heard two of his. His EM and one other that ends with him playing some Jamie XX remix.

Yes, I saw that. He's also playing in Manchester with Nick Warren in March, which is mightily tempting. I've seen him play four times now and it's been different every time. He can be really trancey and melodic (like when we saw him at XOYO) or really dark and hard, or even quite mellow. His Essential Mix last year was fairly laid back, for example.
His productions definitely all have a very distinctive and similar sound, re-using a lot of similar elements. He specialises in that extremely clean tech-y bassline which can sound very flat at home but gains a powerful third dimension on a good sound system.

This was the set that put him on my radar. My partner loves Kompakt and she played this set a lot at the time:
Was not expecting to see a tracklist that promising so I'm very interested to hear how it's materialised. I'm in the hit or miss camp when it comes to Baumel but I would def check him out live as he seems to be quite talented.

This is really good imo
It's a gem, isn't it? I've got it on again now. I think four years ago he was less famous than he is now, so his sets were earlier in the night and were deeper and more melodic. I think this set shows beyond doubt his ability to craft and smooth and flowing set.
EDIT: Although I'd forgotten how much this set gets going in the second half.
