Should I join the military? (Changing life)
View this Thread in Original format
Krypton
I'm thinking about joining the Air Force. I'm not a tough guy, so I'm not considering infantry (army/marines). I've got over $10,000 in student loans (2nd year), a dead-end job as an insurance administrator, and life is just going too slow for what I want to do (entrepreneur). I'm thinking by joining the Air Force, I will stay out of combat, avoid the "grunt life" of being an infantryman, get my loans taken care of, and get way more money than I have ever made. After 2 or 4 years, I would have saved up thousands of dollars. Enough to start my business, and from there, skies the limit.

So, does this sound like a good plan? I need to change my life, and this seems like the best way to do it. I also have a friend who is joining and he wanted me to go to basic training with him. That would be cool to have a friend there. And this friend happens to be someone who I am training in the ways of stock analysis according to my particular financial theories. In other words, he will be one of my business associates once we get a company off the ground. We've got big plans in store, and all we need is a push in the right direction. He works in a bank, I work in a credit union, and we are both at the same point of our lives. Tired of the same old bull...

Yeah, join the military. We can use some cannon fodder like you. Define Irony: An avid and outspoken anti-"zionist" joins the army to participate in a war that many have blamed on America's support of... yup. you guessed it.

Step right up, get your free haircut.

LOL @ irony

The military is not preoccupied with politics. Joining the air force, I would be very unlikely to be sent to Iraq. Most air strikes are done by the navy. Very few air force personnel in Iraq. Zionist, anti-Zionist, none of that matters in the military. You just do what you're told. That does not mean I can't protest the civilian leadership of the country, i.e. Bush Administration. That is my right as an American.

Somehow, some of these images come to mind:

Dunno... Like this is the first thing that popped in my mind:

this was the second:

But then I remembered your PDD posts and this one finally settled in:

Seriously. Doesn't matter whether or not they're accepting of your views, you're still working directly for them.

Look, I'll be totally honest as someone who has gone through a mock-up of your basic training by virtue of being in an Army ROTC (which is not even close to the real deal). It can be summarized as following: IT SUCKS. There are much better ways to pay for your college and while your thought is full of reason and possible other motives, I think you should carefully consider all the risks. Next thing you know, you're fixing a shut-up blackhawk on a field in Afganistan, while being shelled by locals who are not too found of your presense and are seriously considering ing up whatever plans you have... Up to and including getting the out out of there in one piece, with a pulse and sanity intact.

Ok, private Pyle?

2 things.

1 - In both Iraq & Afghanistan I worked with a LOT of airmen, so don't count on not deploying. Granted there are few airmen overseas, they still see a lot of combat. Additionally, LOTS of airmen deploy to support army units (communications, satelites, ordinance etc). And even on a fob, or a "green zone" your ass can STILL get killed by snipers or mortar fire. Especially small patrol bases hahaha we used to have people take pop shots at us when we did PT in the mornings. We worked with Sailors too. So don't ever think that just because you are not army or marines that you will never deploy or never see combat. Hell we took some airforce admin specialist and used him as a truck gunner in Kandahar. If we need a person, we take a person. PERIOD. Not to scare you just letting you know what you are getting into. That being said, you won't be deployed nearly as often or at least not as long. LOL, the past 3 years I've been stateside probably like 9 months, but airforce does like... 3 month tours I think... maybe its 6... thats better than 15 tho.

2. In the military, certain "rights" are resended. You can get into trouble for speaking ill towards any leader - officer, senator, president, etc. Its actually a UCMJ punishable offense. "There is no such thing as speach that is free."

All that being said, I say go for it. The military can do a lot of things for you, such as help you with school and pay off student loans. Its not the only way to help with school but it does help. Ultimately you will do whatever you feel is right, so good luck in your decision.

all i'm going to say is that there is no harm in trying.

i took a step out on a whim and tried it. and i've been loving it (most of it, at least) since day one. if you want more info/perspective, feel free to pm me, or i'm sure Steel, Chris, and Zewad would also entertain any questions.

but you're going to get FOUR completely different opinions...one from a marine punk private who looks at porn at work; one from a distinguished army grunt who has a love/hate relationship w/ his job; another distinguished army officer who regrets leaving the service (to some extent); and an AF officer who has not deployed and seen the "real" operations out there.

its all about you , man, whatever you feel in your heart is right - go for it.

plus, they've got the whole "don't ask don't tell don't persue" thing going for you too:tongue2
