Completely lost and in need of advice.

Matt
So I just finished high school in June. I completed all graduation requirements with an 83.5% average in grade 12 university courses.

During my first semester and half the second, I thought I was going to Trebas in Toronto to do the music production programme. Not too expensive, and I wouldn't need amazing marks to get in. So I slacked a bit and finished my first semester with a 79% average. Then, during the second semester, my interests changed (long story) and I suddenly found myself wanting to go study Theatre @ York University. About a price different of $30k, and a lot harder to get in to. So, I pushed my average up as much as I could to 88% (from 81% at mid-semester) by the end of the year.

I figured now I would take a year off, work full-time, party a little, etc. etc. Now I originally thought I would move back to Toronto sometime in the fall. That's not going to happen now. This makes it incredibly hard to find acting work, so I can expand my portfolio, and increase my chances of getting in to York.

So I am thinking of going back to high school for another year, and re-taking a few courses from first semester to boost my average. Also, I would be able to return to the annual SEARS Drama Festival and expand my portfolio.

So, here is what I need to figure out:

If I re-take courses, it shows up on my transcript. Does the fact I took some course twice hurt my chances of getting in to the programme?

Is it really worth going back to high school in the first place? Or should I just concentrate on making money for a year?

Any help is appeciated.

don't go back to high school if you already have your diploma with an average in the 80's

If you really think it is necessary and have to go to that particular place, maybe it would help. I would definitely not go back for any reason, but your motivations are different. Education is relatively equal, at least in the states, wherever you go. Obviously there are exceptions, but for the most part you will learn the same things as long as you go to an accredited institution. I am not as familiar with more artsy schools, which I imagine this falls under, but I would think you have options with your average.

Are you going to be applying to York in the future? If so I don't think they are too strict on repeated courses.

I just graduated from high school this June too and I think an 88% is more that enough to reapply in the future.

but with the York theatre program, they look more at acting portfolio, as opposed to marks (minimum is 75% avg for theatre).

if I go back to school, I would be guaranteed some acting in a well-known Ontario drama festival (where I won acting awards last year)

suddenly, going back to high school is sounding like a good idea.

Because, if I boost my average up into 85%-90% range, I'll be eligible for a $2000 entrance scholarship from York... plus a higher average will help me get school scholarships...

As far as I know, you can't take the same course twice. It may be different in Canada.

Edit: Unless you fail. :D

Most colleges do not just look and judge you based on your grades. They take into consideration other things. Community Service, Student Activities ( Student Council, Yearbook, ect.) are just some of them.
Most colleges want an all around student. One who helps the community and participates with the school. With your grades at the moment, I would not recommend retaking those classes. It won't do you any good and might even hurt you in the long run.
