For ladies(and guys i guess...) when shopping discounted prices ...

a random dumb rant by me ... but just sharing my knowledge with the rest of the ta's here..

Scenario : whenever one goes shopping, and sees this nice hot new shirt for $70, and the store is having a 35% off sale on shirts .. you want to figure out how much it is at the moment, but you don't have a calculator .. you are limited with your cash, because you are almost at your limit with your credit card, and your check just bounced when you went grocery shopping .. damn it ... here's a helpful way to figure out how to multiply in your head ..

the shirt = $70
the discount = 35%

since you want to know how much you are going "to pay" after the discount, you are going to say (70 * (1 - .35)) .. (1 - .35) is going to be the difference in the "pie" .. consider the pie "one whole" .. 35% will be the discount price you are going to save, and 65% is the price you are going to pay for.. (70 * .35) is the discounted price, and (70 * .65) is the price you are going to pay after the discount.

so you have (70 * .65).

you can split this into

((70 + 0) * (60 + 5)),
or
((70 * 60) + (60 * 0) + (5 * 70) + (0 * 5))

the secret here is to group the numbers by tens, so (70*60)=4200. then you multiply each of the ones column by it's opposite counterpart's tens group .. (0 * 60) and (5 * 70) . and add them together .. lastly, just multiply the ones column normally .. add the results together, and you get (4200 + 350) or 4550.

you are going to pay $45.50.

if you feel this is difficult, then what you can do is round it off by saying ((7*6) + (5 * .7) + (0 * .6) + (.0*.5)) .. just shift everything left by one decimal .. (42 + 3.5 + 0 + 0) = 45.50.. you can just multiply (7 * 6) together to get 42, and treat the rest as the one's column ..

-----------------------

let's do another example, since this example is too easy ..
$96 with a 22% discount.
we are going to say $96 out of a 88% "pie" .. therefore..

(96 * 88)
((90+6) * (80 + 8))
or
((90*80) + (6*80) + (8*90) + (6*8))=
(7200 + 480 + 720 + 48) = (7680 + 768) = 8448 = $84.48.

the easy way:
(9*8) + (6*.8) + (8*.9) + (.6*.8) ~= (about)
(72 + 4 + 7 + .5) ~= 83.5 .. close, huh???
------------------------

if this method seems familiar to you, then yes it is .. it is the algebra II "FOIL" system .. :tongue2

helpful??

That's the stupidest most roundabout way to do that I've ever seen. Just break the 70 into tenths and multiply it by 6.5.

Duh.

that was a stupid example i made .. what about 95 * 35% ?
Dmatrox
uh, just a calculator.

usually i just estimate it. + or - 5 aint no big deal.

Um why not just ask a salesperson? That works, too. They go and check the price. Then I don't have to do any math/work at all! :D
Oh, right... it's probably a guy who started this thread. Asking for a price is like asking for directions? Off limits! lOL!

9.5 * 3.5 = 33.25

Some people are just better at doing math in their heads, I guess.
Dmatrox
oh, btw this is how i estimate using your example

the shirt = $70
the discount = 35%

take 7x3 = 21
take 7x4 = 28

average ~25

70-25 = $45

ez :D

damn it .. i'm offering poor examples to you .. of course they're easy, because all you need to do is to take the halves of each and add them together with the whole numbers .. (9 * 3) + 4.5 + 1.75 ..

I always wondered what stupid ideas occupy intraweb geeks minds when they go shopping

it's fairly easy to figure out what 10% of a price is...so just start by doing that, and then times it by the percentage it's discounted at...well not the whole number, just the first one (like if it's 30%..u times it by 3) that's what i do.

for example

let's say the price is $47.00

so move the decimal over to the left once and what does that get you? 4! now times that by 2 and what does that get you? 8!! so subtract 8 from the price and now you know that 20% off of 47.00 is going to be $39...

don't they have those little price check machines now anyway? they do at macy's. that thing is cool.
