Cats and Dogs Together

I'm gunna get a dog, well maybe. But, currently I have a cat who has lived with me for 7 years or so. The problem with that is since cats are territorial, and I don't know how they go together. If they eventually will come to a truce and not fight, or if they'll tear each others heads off, etc. Anybody have a cat+dog? |

I detest small dogs.
On a positive note, if you get a small dog the cat will just beat the piss out of it. If you get a large dog, the dog will either kill, or get along with the cat. A lot of golden retrievers I've seen love cats. One friend even had a black cat who would perch on top of her golden, and the golden would go walking around with the cat on top. Basset hounds are laid back too. |

the cat will pretty much run and your dog will forever be a wimp... lol
no but seriously, my dog grew up around cats, but they were kittens...it was cute, they all got along. my dog even has cat tendencies. the way he stretches when he gets up from sitting for a long time (that arched back stretch). the kittens were very tiny so i had to bottle feed them kitten formula, but they'd always nuzzle up to my dog (a boy) and try to breast feed from him...it was so funny he'd be looking at me like, "wtf mom? get these things off me!"
my mom has an adult male cat who loves her dog (a boy)...he even walks up to him and purrs and rubs his face all over his. |

if that cat is used to being alone, having the territory all to itself, then theres going to be a problem. its better if both are nuetered. its generally suggested to have both cat and dog raised from a young age, so they'de be used to each other, but now its like the cat is in its mid-30's and all of a sudden somebody moves into its house without it even knowing until the day the person moved in. |

My dog does that, and she's never seen a cat in her life.
I doubt that a mature dog would really seek to kill your cat if you are stern about the rules. When you see it chasing your cat (if you get a big dog), all that should be necessary is just telling it "NO!" When they're older, dogs tend to listen, especially when they know what the consequences are. Your cat is going to have a helluva time though. :haha:
It will definitely be a challenge since you haven't raised them together since they were young, but after a few months, you shouldn't really have problems. My mom introduced a black lab to a house with 2 mature cats living in it - those cats didn't get a wink of sleep, and they were always on edge, even to the owner. It will definitely be a transition period, but if you're looking to do it, I would definitely not get a young dog. Get either an old, mature dog or a puppy, so that you can train it right from the beginning.
My Grandparents had a black himilayan-esque cat and a terrier, raised from, basically, newborns. Puddles and Ninja - a classic pair. They would get along soo well, it was really strange. They would sometimes sleep in each other's arms at night - it was really cute. :happy2:

sorry i should have gotten more in depth w/ my dog's cat tendencies.
anyway, he sleeps on the top part of the couch (usually where cats do), and once he does that cat stretch, he circles a couple times and plops back down...

my dog is the cutest! here's a more recent one

Well yeah - it's a small dog. And most people don't even let their dogs near their furniture. :p
I guess the couch bit is somewhat catty, but what about cleaning habits?
My dog licks herself - her coat that is. Just like a cat would. It's really strange seeing a dog like her (Sharpee) licking her fur like a cat would. And I'll bet she sleeps all over the furniture when we're away as well. :stongue: |

well he is groomed regularly and doesn't really shed, so he's allowed to go wherever he wants. he sleeps in bed with me. if you're going to be a tightass about your furniture, then don't get a dog. that's how i see it. i hate when people buy expensive furniture and it's like you can't even sit on it. i'm all for expensive furniture if i have the money, but i'm going to get my money's worth and sit on it, or sleep on it or something! |
