I run e107 on PHP 5.03 with MySQL 4.0.23 on the standard mysql extension for php. (it's very fast for me). You were probbaly having trouble with the old-passwords thing with MySQL 4.1. Hence, you could not get anything, much like what I was. You'd have to enable old passwords in the my.ini, or start the daemon with -old-passwords I belive. DO NOT, use PHP5 + MySQL 4.1 and MysqlI It's too new and nothing really works with that yet. You cannot get mysqli and mysql extenstion with php5 working together AFAIK. I just had a go around with php 5.03 and mysql 4.1 and 4.0. It's a long story. The best combo that works right now is PHP 5.03 / MySQL 4.0.23. That work's fine. And that's bleeding edge! ;p Both MySQL and php have taken the piss over the new updates they have released.

Some help;
http://ca.php.net/mysqli/
http://dev.mysql.com/doc/mysql/en/Old_client.html
http://dev.mysql.com/doc/mysql/en/Upgrading-from-4.0.html

In sort;
Stay on 4.0.23 mysql, upgrade to php5 using the old mysql ext. just complile with --no-mysqli --with-mysql thats if you want bleeding edge. Otherwise, stay where you are.

Hope this helps, somewhat.

yeah .. we're back .. i was online at 1 am last night, and i wake up this morning, and find a "Too many connections" message .. i thought the tas were raiding the damn site again ..

but kudos for trying to fix it swamper.. it looks like we both had computer problems last night ..

last night, my main home server (not a web server, because i do not have broadband connections at home.. i have dial up damnnit) went berserk on me, and kept on giving me these messages :

"c:\windows\system32\config\ is corrupted. please run the recovery console on your windows 2000 cd by hitting 'r' "
"PROCESS1_INITIALIZATION_FAILED. please check your BIOS, and disable any new resources, or disable your extended video flash settings. if you want to go through the advanced setup, hit F8 when you startup."

that sucked. had to reload the OS, but this time i was prepared for this type of error. happened the last time on me. this time, i partitioned everything on my extended partition, and just leave about 4 gigs on my primary partition. performance takes a small toll, but i get data protection. i don't know what i will do if i lost all my life's work. :tongue2

but congrats on the effort swamper.
