trying to get 5.1 working in a weird setup

Ok, so here goes. Right now, I have my Logitech Z-640s hooked up to my ps2/dvd player's RCA cables with that little adapter that came with it. Prob is I only get matrixed 6 channel sound. I think I have a solution, but I'm honestly not sure if it will work (don't plan on buying a decoder box, kinda low on cash).

If I buy a sound blaster Audigy 2 pcmcia for my laptop, I can get the sound decoded through there to get true 5.1 on my speakers. Since it has an optical input, I'm wondering if I could use my laptop to route the sound from my ps2/dvd player through the card, and then get it to decode the signal into true 5.1.

If any of you guys know anything about this, it'd be greatly appreciated.

You will not get 5.1 surround with RCA cables, The back of the PS2 is a connector for optical cables, If your surround receiver has connection for optical cables on the back, You will have to connect an optical cable from the PS2 to the receiver, I have a PS2 connected to my receiver using an optical cable, The receiver does all the decoding automatically, So if you were to watch DVD movies on the PS2, Your receiver will automatically decode the signal in the optical cable to give you 5.1 surround sound. You can buy optical cables at places like Radio shack.

the speakers he is talking about are for PC use, thusly no receiver.

they kinda assume, that since you are buying PC speakers, you have a 5.1 surround card, with the normal 3 or 4 plugs, normally front, rear, and sub.

i'm not totally sure if it would work. you can always buy it, try it, and if it doens't work, claim failure and return it.

well, I bought it. It does do the optical pass-through. I need a special cable for it though. Thanks for your help guys.
