Headphone problem

This might get a better reception in one of the music forums, but this section is a bit more activ,e so Ill post here first. I have a pair of Sennheiser HD555's and recently, the sound in the left cup has been disapearing when i have the volume low. If i jack up the volume, the sound returns for a random amount of time (sometimes seconds or hours) before repeating.
I am running RCA outs from my M-Audio 2496 to my sony STR-K84OP A/V Receiver. The Senns are plugged directly into that. I've a sneaking suspicion that the cable from pc to rec. is damaged, but any prior experience would be nice. |

| have you tried twisting the different cables ( interconnects, headphone etc ) to see if sound cuts in and out? |

But playing with the 3 inputs that aren't on my pc have all fixed that problem at different times. The headphones worked ok in another device, so im fairly sure it isn't them.
I suppose i should just try to plug something else into the amp input or test the wires elsewehre, but thats requires a bit more work |
