NEW YORK (Reuters) - New Yorkers who blithely cross the street listening to an iPod or talking on a cell phone could soon face a $100 fine.
New York State Sen. Carl Kruger says three pedestrians in his Brooklyn district have been killed since September upon stepping into traffic while distracted by an electronic device. In one case bystanders screamed "watch out" to no avail.
Kruger says he will introduce legislation on Wednesday to ban the use of gadgets such as Blackberry devices and video games while crossing the street.
"Government has an obligation to protect its citizenry," Kruger said in a telephone interview from Albany, the state capital. "This electronic gadgetry is reaching the point where it's becoming not only endemic but it's creating an atmosphere where we have a major public safety crisis at hand."
Tech-consuming New Yorkers trudge to work on sidewalks and subways like an army of drones, appearing to talk to themselves on wireless devices or swaying to seemingly silent tunes.
"I'm not trying to intrude on that," Kruger said. "But what's happening is when they're tuning into their iPod or Blackberry or cell phone or video game, they're walking into speeding buses and moving automobiles. It's becoming a nationwide problem."

1.) How many pedestrians have been killed since September for reasons other than cell phones and MP3 players?

2.) That's a waste of time. I have no problem with governments protecting it's citizens, but don't protect the idiots. They're dumb enough to do it, so let them suffer the consequences and let yourselves focus on more important issues. |

hey if im getting fined to listen to my music, then people who are stopping me from getting from where i need to be should get fined too
if you're going to take a picture do it properly and be considerate of million other people on walking along the sidewalk. move to the side and take the picture, i'm sure 100% of these tourist don't even THINK about moving to the side to take a picture, let alone realize that they are in someones way...
and to circle back to the topic, new yorkers have something most people don't have, they are able to pay attention to things without paying attention to it specifically. you can be looking at your mp3 player and know when the light has changed because of the motion around you, like the cars are moving parallel to you which means the cross light is red so you can walk...
you can't say anything about NYC is bull unless you lived here and if you lived here you'll know exactly what i mean. |

I thought I heard the number around 1,000 pedestrians killed annually in New York...but isn't that high?
And I like tourists stopping in the middle of the sidewalk to take pictures. It gives me an excuse to shout, "get the outa my way, bitch!" |

I'm saying that neither of those people should be fined.

If/when I go some place, I'm always cautious about taking photos and getting out of the way of people. I guess if I go to NYC I wouldn't do that when I'm there, because apparently "100% of these tourist don't even think about moving to the side."

I've seen that in every city I've visited, so I don't think you know what you're talking about.

Oh, I can. Any law like that, no matter where it exists, is bull. New York is no more special than any other city out there. Get your head out of your ass. |
