So, I just had a massage...

There's this dude I go to when my neck and shoulders get so screwed that I can no longer use a computer. He's not a physiotherapist or a chiropractor, just an awesome, awesome masseur with a really great understanding of the human body. I usually end up seeing him about once a month

Anyway, so today I'm half way through a massage and he said "this isn't working so well, do you want to try cupping?" to which I replied "knock yourself out".

As a result, my back now looks like this, except that mine are all raised, like giant pimples. :gsmile: Also there are about twenty of them, not five.

It looks gross, but I can't believe how amazingly awesome I feel. Haven't felt this good in months!

cor version: cupping is teh awesome.

I think i've seen something like that on tv. I'd like to try that my self.

It feels like my whole torso is lighter.

Movement is much, much easier, and a whole lot of dull pain I didn't even realise I had is now gone.

edit: basically like you would after a normal massage, but far more dramatic.

Interesting, but but I must profess my ignorance. What exactly is cupping?

Like, how does it work? :conf:

from the looks of it, i would assume they attach one or more suction cups and push/pull move it around to relax.

or maybe even suspend you from several cups?

They get a glass jar, stick some alcohol in it, set it on fire and jam it on your skin. It's meant to stimulate the skin and external nervous system via pressure points.

They burn a wick inside little bell-shaped jars, heating the air inside.

After that, they put it on your body, where it cools, creating a pressure difference and sucking your skin up into the jar, pulling up blood and other fluids towards the skin.

The reason that it works s because it releases blood from areas of poor circulation (i.e tight/injured muscles), which allows new blood to flow in and repair the area, just like conventional massage or the hot/cold technique. The darker the mark left behind, the more "stale" the blood behind was (stale means lots of co2 instead of oxygen).

My marks are a deep burgundy, which means they are bad, but not overly. Apparently some people with pluracy and lung diseases get jet black welts. I'd take a photo of mine but I have no camera.

Before today, I didn't even know that this masseuse, who've I've probably seen fifteen or twenty times, mostly during my athletic career, could do this stuff. Crazy.

p.s I'm freezing my nuts off. Apparently this technique makes you lose a lot of heat. I'm sitting here in a thermal vest, full length lycra tights, trackpants, a long-sleeve t-shirt and a hoody, but I'm still pretty cold.
