What is it about Donnie Darko that makes it so special a film? It seemingly eludes all established critics, and even seems to transcend cult status in a sense. I've had only a few friends who have claimed it to be a movie you either completely get or think you get, myself being of the latter group. These friends were all pretty strange though - I wouldn't call them criminals and certainly not people acting out for the image - but they were indeed "bad" kids if you know the type of person I am talking about. Anyone?

Donnie Darko is probably a cult movie. It is a nice mixture of various concepts such as an atypical kind of teenage-adventure, pseudo-mysticism and metaphysics, hypocricy and social roles and trascends an overal enigmatic atmosphere that leaves you (or maybe creates the impression of leaving you) confused and perplexed. Oh yeah it has a nice soundtrack as well, from the slow (ballad) version of that Tears for Fears track, Joy Division and Echo and The Bunnymen (pun?) to the magnificent operatic/orchestral segments (such as the one during the "cinema" scene in which Donnie meets the Bunny-masked guy). Situated between pop and experimental this is a very good movie by all means. We need more movies like that.
