At first sight, the term reminds me of "man-date," a concept that the kind of inane pop culture monitors who write for NYMag or the NYTimes style section were throwing around a couple of years ago. A "man-date" is when two heterosexual guys have dinner at a sit-down place or see a movie together. Gee golly, what a novel idea!
But I guess the punch of it is that the two guys are both good liberal dudes who are supposed to be tolerant of homosexuality and develop a keen sense of fashion, while also being scrupulous about not being seen as gay themselves. This is supposed to be a difficult balancing act, and is of course endlessly amusing to the women who typically write such articles.
