Anyone have any recommendations? I'm looking for a real one, but I can't afford anything too expensive. It is a Christmas gift to my research group.

and what is considered too expensive for you?
Zild
too expensive is like a $1000 copper manual machine a barista would use, i also don't have much space in the lab to put it, so smaller is better

lol im looking for 1 too
an espressoo/cappuccino machine

i was about to buy 1 today from starbucks
ill wait till boxing week i guess

any recommendations?

well it depends. most people that say they want an espresso machine want it because they think it will be cheap and easier and quicker than sbux. so most go out and buy a mid range one and then give up when it gets confusing/clogged/or requires them to use some sort of technique.

the more money you spend, the more automatic it should be. if you have ever actually made a coffee drink, however, taking away control is kinda missing the point.

im looking to get one too, but mostly just to have around and have the ability to steam milk + froth milk. looking at getting this:

it is bulletproof but requires you to pay attention. for most people that is unacceptable. it is also not too expensive...

Get a Rancilio Silvia. Best value for money high end domestic machine. Quality machine. Made in Italy, solid brass boiler. Learn to temp surf and you can pull nice shots from it pretty consistently. If you feel like it you could PID mod later down the track. Also remember that you really need a good grinder to get even half decent shots out of a good espresso machine. Google this baby up it's a real classic check out the amount of discussion it creates on forums.

I do expect to have to learn how to use it. Will look into a good grinder s well.

If you find the silvia is out of your range you can often get refurbed ones really cheap... you might even have enough left over to get a good grinder too.

i had a Krups espresso machine for about 9 months and then it died. have a Mr. Coffee one now. very easy to make; and was like $65 i think? i don't remember.
