X's videos are the best. Definitely contributed to the explosion of Minecraft interest.

Just dig out a cave, thats what I did at the start. :p To keep yourself busy at night just mine back in your cave too.
Remember that when you can dig straight down as well and not worry about getting stuck. Just select the rocks you collected while digging, look down and jump while right clicking to place them! I tend to use dirt though instead of rocks to go back up, cause if I want to go back down again, dirt is easier to break apart.

I dont think the game would be as good if the graphics were more complex. It really suites how it plays.
I am thinking about starting a new map though... The one I am playing on now is ing snowing, and I do not know if it will ever stop. All the water is frozen... :(
