I can't believe people... my university is once again in the news (birds licking sausages inside)

 The University of Brasilia is pretty much the Brazilian version of Berkeley: one of the best higher education institutions in the country with a bunch of hippies as students and too politicised for its own good. And we're often on the news: 3 years ago a handful of students rebelled and managed to expel the dean (which is quite a feat, if you think about it). A while later the students invaded the closest thing we have to a city hall and tried to overthrow the state government - and the governor resigned a few weeks after this incident. Yeah, that's UnB!
A couple of weeks ago, a TV crew decided to explore the underground classrooms where the students drove the professors out and, as expected, found a lot of people using drugs and playing videogames/snooker when they were supposed to be in class. It appeared on the telly a couple of times and I'm not sure anybody did anything about it (the dean said our university was "top quality" and that was it). Then, last week, during one of the numerous initiation rituals found in higher institutions (that is, hazing) the Agronomy students organised a party in which the freshmen (or rather, the freshwomen) were offered a sausage with condensed milk to lick. And, as usual, at least one of them did.
Pictures were taken and, some feminist who had nothing to do with this whatsoever, claimed the women were being oppressed as sexual objects (even though every time they interview the girls, they were fine with it). Next thing you know, the bloody president of the republic got the news and decided to do something about it. I can't believe it! The president?! Am I missing something here? Stoners sponsoring criminal activities in the state - fine. Hazing in general - fine. Girls deliberately licking sausages with condensed milk - outrage! Not because they're minors, not because they were coerced, not because it finances criminal activities or because someone could get seriously hurt.
But because it degrades women that didn't mind being degraded. Because, after all, it's blatantly do fellatio to people that don't respect you. Or whatever the argument is. I'm lost. Can someone tell me what's going on? I need an outsider here.
Oh, contemporary Brazilian culture, thou est my mind!

Not that many orgies, Yohan, though I can't say sex on campus is unheard of, and I know of some hilarious stories about Africans running naked in the underground corridors after some very disturbing walk-ins :p

These shenanigans are cheeky and fun, the hazing at my college that led to 4 deaths was cruel and tragic. Which makes them not even shenanigans at all.
There is a lot of psychological voodoo that goes on with hazing. Which is why frat and sorority peoples feel such a bond with their people. At the end of all of the hazing they think, "I wouldn't go through all that just to hang out with a bunch of d-bags". When really you can create the bond without the escalating dangerous behavior. Ours also started with sausage licking type behaviors, then always led to mass drinking and other crap. |
