I just wanted to make this thread because I'm simply fascinated by his writing, and "I haven't felt like this since Shakespeare" :p
What's even funnier is that I'm almost thirty and have never been into any kind of dungeons nor dragons on any level, but the whole Ctulhu mythos has become awesome to me simply because it's written in such way that it paints more powerful (darker!) pictures than any brush ever could. =)
Would be nice to know if anyone else is in to him, and more familiar with his works. I still have a TON of audio and a few books to get through, plus The Necronomicon. Currently reading the Omnibus 1 - At The Mountains of Madness collection.
In a letter to Frank Belknap Long, September 4 1923
I am lately inform'd that, all these weeks later, young Donald's first remark on being introduc'd to Niagara Falls, was the exclamation: "Gee, what wou'd Mr. Lovecraft say!" -- a thing which may be taken as evidence, that the youth is not unimprest with volubility and flow, whether in aqueous torrents or in childish old gentlemen.
Are you imprest with volubility and flow, whether in aqueous torrents or in the books and stories of childish old gentlemen..? :p

Have you read 'The Cats Of Ulthar? (quite a short story..). Just wondering since it was the one that aroused my curiosity.. It had me purring with sonorous content. :p

Apart from that, Lovecraft ftmfw!
If you like him you might also want to check out Thomas Ligotti.
My favourites are probably Pickman's Model, The Shunned House, The Horror At Red Hook, and The Music Of Erich Zann.
By and far, I think he is my favourite author. There are other books by other people I might just like more, but so far as the author himself is concerned, Lovecraft is just such a great guy.

I don't have much to say in regards to that video, except that it was once again a powerful reminder that dramatisation is ftl. Pisses me off since I must have like 50 audiobooks (or rather, clips) of his stories, and half of them are unlistenable because they either contain some stupid sfx, or they were narrated by some 15 year old fan. But the ones that have that 'right' voice.. gat damn.
Plus for me, as an amateur reader, the fact that he almost exclusively wrote short stories, is making it a lot easier for me to read. :p
Here's a perfect example of how godawful it can sound when given the wrong voice.

If I'm not wrong, almost all of those stories are on the Omnibus 2 - collection, which coincidentally is the next book I have lined up.. Glad to know you like it, because I was already quite certain that it would exceed my ever-growing expectations. :)

Are you guys joking? Lovecraft is one of the worst writers I've ever read. Shockingly poor. There's a reason he was never published outside the pulps until long after he was dead.
His ideas were very good, and there's no doubt he's the most influential horror writer of the last hundred years, but his prose is awful and his stories contrived and clunky. Pickman's Model and The Rats In The Walls are the only ones I'd give the time of day. The Outsider is like a bad parody of Poe.
