Hi all,
New here, loving all the tutorials and advice. I've been teaching myself production for about 2 or 3 months now.
I'm very new to music theory, and forming my own chord progressions and lead melodies.
I'm aiming to create a goa/psytrance type of sound. One of my favorite tracks uses an irish sounding lead at minute 5:10 (Jiggle of the Sphinx, Youtube link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=evZOVRpcDWo )
I'm not sure what modal/scale structure to look at to begin coming up with a similar, light/airy "irish" sound as found at around minute 5:10 of that song.
Can anyone recommend any advice or input on where to start?
I'd also be really appreciative for any specific lead melody type tutorials related to psy that might be buried here, I've done some looking, but there's a lot to dig through!
Many thanks for any input! |

You'll find that most Celtic music is in the minor key, but it also uses Dorian and Mixolydian modes pretty extensively. I don't have a keyboard at work here, but the song you posted sounds to be in one of the E minor modes (probably just minor). What gives this part the characteristic Celtic feel is probably related as much to the extensive use of triplets:

usually thought of more in modes.
ionian is the most common
mixolydian
dorian
aeolian
for trance , probably one of the last 2. |

It might sound especially Irish just because he's starting to layer it with flutes. The synth alone does a poor job at sounding particularly Irish imo, the melody is definitely fast and tripletbased. |

sounds cliche irish to me.
honestly, just play a pentatonic scale major or minor and you can sound irish or asian or duck |
