A few questions about making a remix

OK, I have no musical background, I have a basic idea of how a song is structured, beats to a bar etc. I feel I have a really good ear for music, but no technical skills per say. This is my problem:
Basically I want to remix a song. I have all the different tracks, bass, strings, piano etc.
Are there some fundamental rules that I have to abide by?
Does anybody have any essential tips and tricks?
What is the basic process of making a remix? Or does it differ from person to person?
Is Reason a good program to learn with?
I don't want to be lead hand in hand, just some general pointers.
Thanks

The basic idea of doing a remix is taking the main parts of the original and then giving your own interpretation of the tune with them.
How you want to do it is entirely up to you, though :) |

Learn while playing
As soon as you have made you first song, you know what mistakes not to make for your next song. And so on. I've been producing for 5 or 6 years and I still don't know how to make a decent mastering ;)
Use Reason if you got it. You can use any program as long as you make any songs at all! |
