I'm curious to know... What are your roots?
Now I don't mean ethnically. I mean your musical roots. Before finding the bliss of trance you no doubt had to wallow the years away with some sort of music, so I am curious to know what.
I, for example, am a recovering punker. I still on occasion attend concerts (the whole time wishing the sound was cleaner, the crowd far-less violent, and the show went later than 1 am) , but usually if the fancy hits me I get my fix from Ska - lord bless and save the Slackers and Arsenals.
One of the main reasons I ask is because I found it was really difficult at first getting used to the completely disparate scenes and styles. The worst was other than the pogo, skank and mosh I had no friggin clue how to 'dance'. Feeling comfortable moving to trance - and associated musics - is something I still have to put effort into...
Anyway, how about the rest...

well me ... my parents made me grow up with classical music ...
and I happened to live by a techno radio station when I was 8 years old .... I used to go there on wednesday afternoons when I skipped my music classes ( what a bad child at such a young age )
and well I grew up techno after that ..... it's been a long road ... since then I've picked up with rap , and some independent rock : but the key has always been , if it's not commercial, I like it...
I'm open to all styles of music today , with a preference for electronic music, and french rap :p |

I'm a ex-rapaddict...although I will still listen to people such as DMX, Eminem, and Nas. The majority of stuff produced today is utter bull. |

since I was about 6 years old, I always listened to eurodance and freestyle (yes, I was quite the little gino). Then I progressed more into house about 4 years ago, and from house I learned trance, breaks, DnB, and every other electronic music. Now I listen to mostly progressive house, breaks, trance, and some DnB. I also listen to rock, but that's mostly when I'm at work. The only music I really hate now is country, and yes, the music that started it all, eurodance. I just can't stand that happy ! |

you make it sound like its bad to like punk...
i was and still am a huge fan of punk rock... liking trance doesn't (or shouldn't) exclude other genres from your musical preferences... when it comes to music, i say, the more the merrier, =P. |

Sorry, I gave the wrong impression. I love the music, it's the scene that started to bother me, deeply. I'll save the public my diatribe on the present state of punk. For a while I was deep into the scene. I was the guy who never lined up out front 'cuz I was already inside - interviewing the band - or at a pub - interviewing the band - or I was in their trailer - getting stoned with the band.
The short story is I got really tired of watching guys make a business out of it all, while all the while decrying anyone who was making a business out of it all. The "who's cool and who's a sellout" sing-song got really tired. I listened to all kinds of music, and still do... But when it comes to punk, as much as I love the music, I'm just really sick and tired... Same bull for the last 30+ years, just now MTV has figured out a way to make serious cash off of it (al la studio punk).
Yes, I'm the cranky old fart who complains about, "Back when I was a Punker we didn't have neck ties. We had to make due with chains, and rusty ones at that!" :thepirate
