Starting a record company...

hey everyone,

ok, i'm sure a lot of people have at least thought about this at some point in there music making "careers", but does anyone know what sorta steps one can take to develop there own record company? anyone, done it or tried? i'm been really seriously looking into it for about a week now and want to go through with it. of course internet research can only go so far. so any advice would be appreciated.

Well, were talking first a huge ammount of funding.

And some rooms, where you could handle businiss, cause even small labels have alotta "trafic".

What youd need is to have contact with a pressing company and some artists. Then what you need is to have maybe a lawyer or some legal form write contracts for you and get artists to sign to your label.

youd also need publishing company, to transport the vinyls to the stores. This where contacts of course come in handy to help you meet the "right" people.

Then its just hoping that you get enough PR for people to notice you ;=)

hey mcbigmac,

thanks for the input...good words of wisdom. as far as the lawyer, well i'm in law school right now so i'm working on it. i also graduated from under grad with a finance degree so now i'm just trying to put the peices together because i'm gonna do this. i'm tired of the record label crap that you get now ya know. anyway, thanks for the advice.

on the same topic... what do you think about someone managing only there own records. of course a business could grow from that, but i don't know if i'm willing to take on the financial burden before i'm sure of everything. i was thinking of just managing my own records until i have a clearer picture of the responsibilities. this of course would take less infrastructure and less start up money, but could it be successful. i'm thinking the way to go with that is to maybe deal more with current labels and try to establish yourself as a sublabel of some sort? more thoughts? like you said PR is the biggest challenge.
McBigMac
This could infact work if you had the capital....

But youd have to require, alot of time on your hands.

Some days would require almost no attention while others would require most of your day.

But i guess its possible to manage your own little thing. Id recommend however getting together some friends and finding and establishing a little place.

Its a tough choice tho ;)

It could work however, but unless you have fund and time, i think it in the end go wrong :(

Is it mate! :)
It covers basicly everything u need to know! And thatīs alot! ;)

One thing u oughta check out it , is what it costs to press a vinyl.

Here in sweden the price for 500 12"s is:

1026.00 $

And thatīs the price for the full package (labels, grapihx and the papper thing the record lies in)

Does anyone know how many % the Record store takes of every sold record? , letīs say a record cost 10$ , how much do the store take from that?

its all about markup...

lets say you want to press some vinyl. if you are in the record business you can probably get some kind of discount for bulk orders or a trade discount or someting. or even still what is that in sweden... 2$ a vinyl so you mark that up and send it to the stores. then of course the store marks it up to that retail price 10$ whatever so you don't get all of that, but maybe say 5-6$ per sale. then like you mentioned the record company probably keeps some of that if you aren't managing yourself of course and so on. i could go into more detail but i don't want to bore everyone hehe. it comes down to the chain of markups leading to that final store price. the % aren't necessarily standard, but up to the dealer to decide.
