This reminds me of a time my mate was stoned and decided to confuse his cat, by pretending he spoke another language... so he's getting in its face making jibberish sounds until he realises that its a cat and can't tell the difference anyway.
I think its more a matter of body language and tone that animals interpret. Talk to dogs and cats in a high pitched, pleasant tone in any language and they'll respond positively.

Try this: Come up to a domestic cat, slowly crouch down, reach out your hand and go "ksss ksss ksss..." and it'll come to you (if its in a good mood); Whistle to a dog and make some clicking sounds and it'll look at you and get all excited and wag its tail... works in any country from my experience.

I can confirm that dogs only understand one language:

90% of all drug sniffing dogs used at US airports come from Holland. We happen to be very good in training those animals.

The police officers using those dogs have to learn quite a few Dutch words/sentences to be able to command these dogs. The animals are used to Dutch language in their training :)

So an dog in Italy doesn't listen to "sit!", or maybe only if you point at the ground the same time

Kind of along the same lines but I've always wondered this:
Lets say you grow up learning english until you can speak fluently. Then at around 18 you move to lets say france and over time you learn to speak french fluently and use it everyday. So now you can speak two languages, but what I want to know is, what language do you THINK in your head? Like when you talk french, are your thoughts in enlish or vice-versa?

Well I speak english for 21 years and german for 7 french for 5 and spanish for 1 year, and it is confusing for me, i keep saying gracias cos i've got so used to it

it really depends on where you are, i guess, and who you're thinking about, etc etc etc.

Sometimes I think in English, when I'm in Canada...but sometimes in Polish as well, usually when I'm thinking about something that relates to Poland.

When I'm in Poland, I rarely think in English

Lo0ol! That's the first time i see that word... pretty funny!

anyway, well i think that cats and dogs, respond to both the language they're used to hearing, and the "Talk to dogs and cats in a high pitched, pleasant tone in any language and they'll respond positively" kind of language.
