I've recently discovered the Russian bard* Visotsky's work (obviously I always knew about him cos he's so famous, but I only recently have started to appreciate his work) and I must say that IMHO this guy was a ing hero.
Just wondering if any Russian (or not) TA's out there also appreciate his work.

His voice screamed over the terror and oppression of the Soviet totalitarian regime. He was the embodiment of the Russian spirit screaming to be heard over the voices of the oppressors. You can seriously hear his heart cry out - especially just with a guitar, or when he's pissed - which wasn't uncommon as he had a serious alcohol problem. His poetry is powerful and moving, and when you listen to him performing you understand why he died so young - I once heard someone say something like, "life is a poison which the meek drink in sips and the great in huge gulps". This was a man who didn't care about the consequences of his actions and what rules the authorities tried to impose on him, he truly lived life to the full in an atmosphere which tried to stifle and imprison life wherever it appeared. He wasn't satisfied with mere existance and cried out in the name of the soviet populace "we want to live!"

*For those of you not familiar with the Russian bard tradition, it's basically poetry recited (sort of sung but not really) over guitar chords.

Visotsky is a very powerful singer. When I was younger (10-11) I watched his biography. He was a very religious man who loved god, he was a serious alcoholic, I also believe he performed under the influence. But, nevertheless, he was/is loved by many. He speaks powerful words, with a powerful voice. Lots of emotion in his work.
He definately has my respect.
BTW - Im not a fan :).

Visotsky (Is this the correct russian spelling?) was a great man with a deep meaning behind the lyrics of his songs... I deeply respect his talent in this regard. It's just too bad he has passed away at a relatively young age...
