It sounds good to me overall production wise, but kind of generic in my opinion. I really like a lot of your works but this one doesn't stand out to me that much.

Overall I think this is pretty good. The kind of arp lead up front gets a little repetitive in my opinion, but the mixing and sound design seem great to me.

I wrote/produced this track and also am on vocals. I don't really know the genre. Maybe dreampop/progressive house or something. Feedback on anything-the songwriting, production, vocals-is appreciated:

The vocals are really rough. I'd recommend investing in something like melodyne if you want to use your own vocals. More than anything, you need to practice. The tone isn't very good and you drift in & out of pitch a lot. Often, it sounds like you know the note you're trying to hit, but don't initially hit it, and need to drift to it.

The reverb/delay effect on the vocals too is really distracting and doesn't add anything. The effects in the hook in particular I think just don't suit the song whatsoever. You'd probably get better results if you didn't distort it like that and instead performed it multiple times and layered it. That way you can do imaging in the chorus. Some harmonic content would benefit it too.

If you struggle with pitch you might find it easier to get a pleasing performance by recording the exact same performance many times and layering them with chorus, panning, etc.

I think the lyrics are extremely cheesy but that's kind of canon for this kind of thing. The repeated "this" in the chorus.. idk.

The track itself is totally fine though and would work well if the vocals were greatly improved.

Thanks for the detailed feedback. I don't have much experience doing vocals at all, and like you say I think I have a lot of practicing to do. I'll probably save this one and either get an experienced/talented vocalist or do them myself if I have better technique later.

Until you pointed it out I didn't realize I ended each phrase of the chorus with "this". I'm going to need to change that.

Caleb, vocals are hard to get right, yours sounds like a classic early attempt.

First off add no effects, just get the raw takes as good as you can. It make take dozens of goes.
I sometimes record each section over and again until ok or just sing out the entire song 10-20 times than comp the best parts together.

I once read Gaga is made to sing a song 50-100 times and her producer then comps the best individual parts.

Next remove all unwanted pops and shit. I often do this with scissors and volume automation.
Also use volume automation and SEVERAL compressors to even out the amplitude.

THEN get into re-pitching using software. Cubase has this built in, don't know if your DAW does?

Then start layering and harmonising (for real or with software)

Then start adding chorus, eq etc etc - build and build slowly

Lastly add in delay and verb but boy these need care.


I'm not a singer so often make the use of short passages only.

PS - another tip > avoid words that don't record so well such as 'thithssss'!!
You will know instinctively when a word is awkward and out of place

It sounds great and warm and enjoyable to my ears, lots of proper Jarre type lazers and fx in there, what are you using for these?

thx for the advice on mine, I'm not surprised u and evo mention compression but I have to be honest and say I quite like that pumping compression overload but I did it almost all with volume automation not dynamics.

I am onto to the other things you mention but I have used various widening already so not sure if I can do much more.

I like it not a litte; definitely the best work I've ever heard from you - nice, deep and spacey. The only thing I could probably do without is the constant beat (hihat?) in the background. Everything else is perfect. If you can remove it without changing anything else, I'd love to hear it. I'd also consider adding some sci-fi movie/NASA samples, just to see how it would sound, but it's not at all necessary.

Should definitely get it released, or continue to make a full album.

The percs are very lacking and do not create any sort of drive like a track of this type needs. It's particularily noticeable when the lead synth hits, because all you can hear is the lead and the beat.

I don't know if it's because you're going to implement vocals to this or what, but the whole mixdown sounds pretty odd. The percs are pushed in the back, and the whole midrange seems squashed somehow.

Mate the sound I mentioned previously comes in around 4 minutes in - a square lead. It adds nothing IMO.
I like the drive and everything but for me it's too harsh in the uppers - but people are saying my DnB tracks lacks in that same department so I'm thinking most people like those powerful sizzling hi's whereas I do not as I find it a harsh listening experience.

I think I am in a minority as I find most commercial tracks sound way to fried egg for me in the hi's but clearly other people love this sound.
