Whoa, Blue Ruin was awesome. Go watch it! It's a slow-burner but a really great revenge flick. The director does a stellar job at building suspense.

Ex Machina was very stylish, and love love loved the soundtrack. But I don't know how I feel about the feminist tone. It wasn't subtle at all, which is perhaps what rubbed me the wrong way about it, but I guess that's the point? I dunno. I'm not let down, just... underwhelmed.

It was very stylish, and I agree with you 100% on the soundtrack. The outdoor footage was awesome. It's hard to believe places like that actually exist. I didn't pick up on the feminist tone so much, but now that you point it out I can see it. Definitely picking up the Blu-ray on release date to support everyone involved. This was head and shoulders above The Machine and Automata.

SPOILER SORRY

I should clarify that I'm unsure as to whether or not the feminist edge was intentional or not, it's just that given the familiarity of the other themes explored in the film and predictability of the plot, the feminist subtext is what jumped out at me the most.

Blatantly misogynistic tech nerd creates, objectifies, and abuses/is cruel to super sexy female AI and, in fact, DOES NOT underestimate their intelligence and even seems to resent it - so he keeps them all locked up (sort of like the way men have been objectifying and opressing women for years in various ways); female AI uses the most basic of her "gifts", her sexuality (classic femme fatale tactic, again something her male creator probably resents because she is smarter than him and doesn't even have to use the brains he gave her lololol), to manipulate her male oppressors so she can be liberated.

I know that's a stretch and I realize the whole gender + sexuality thing was integral to the AI's superiority over the humans, but like I said - given the familiarity of everything else, to me it was pretty in your face. And I am not a feminist, lol.

I really really liked this film and it certainly was pleasing to the senses, but I can't say I loved it or that it's one of those ones I will go back to over and over again. That I'm even engaged in a debate about it is a testament to how thought provoking it is though. I am a fairly big movie nerd, but I rarely get involved in discussions about them.

I watched wild. Reminded me of an ex gf of mine minus the heroin and banging strangers in the back of a diner.

Really good movie. I was very surprised. I tried to stay away from it because I felt it was going to be a bit of a feminist movie. However I couldn't sleep one night and popped it on and got really into it. I suggest you peeps watch it.

She had a mouth like a Hoover vacum cleaner though. But no not her. A recent one.

San Andreas was as expected filled with moments where you laugh out loud at the overblown cliches. Decent 3D effects overall, I was forced to watch it in the cinema, which I definitely wouldn't have normally. The characters are super predictable, you know who is going to die/fall in love 5 seconds after you first see them on screen. We had a bunch of 12 year olds behind us applauding every time something heroic took place. It wasn't a rare occurence.

Out of boredom I also watched Run All Night, which I expected to be much worse than what it was. The guy from the new Robocop looks like he might have a bright future ahead of him. Liam was actually good versus Harris. Ed is an underrated actor at least as an antagonist. The story is decent and kept me interested most of the movie.

Do I recommend any of the two? Sure, watch San Andreas if you want really brainless action heavily laden with cliches. Run All Night works on many levels, it even has some cool cgi-effects that don't look worse than Jurrasic Park. I'd say watch it if you like Liam or Harris. As someone on imdb wrote; "it's better than all the Taken movies.".

I watched Chappie with Die Antwoord.
If you liked District 9 and aren't in a serious mood it's worth watching. I enjoyed it.

Posted by Vivid Boy on Jun-05-2015 19:51:

District 9 is by far the more superior movie.

Chappie was a 1 1/2 hr die antwood promo movie

Oh funny, I just read Redd's thoughts on Ex Machina and see that he agrees about the lack of subtlety. Thought it was just me.

I had to Google to see who actually is Die Antwoord afterwards, never even bothered to search after hearing some of their tracks

District 9 of course is better, but I don't think it was a waste of time.

Yep missed it too. The movie looks great.

I think American Snyper is supposed to be good.

Nothing like military men on tv.

Anyone seen "Bite" yet?

Heard it's pretty gross. Probably just hype.

"While on her bachelorette party getaway, Casey, the bride to be, gets a seemingly harmless bite from an unknown insect. After returning home with cold feet, Casey tries to call off her wedding but before she's able to, she starts exhibiting insect like traits. Between her physical transformation and her wedding anxiety, Casey succumbs to her new instincts and begins creating a hive that not only houses her translucent eggs, but feeds on the flesh of others. As her transformation becomes complete, Casey discovers that everything can change with a single bite."

Hah, that might be fun, but is most likely ruined by being laughably bad. Haven't heard about it before though, and it doesn't even have a cover picture on IMDB. Run of the mill straight to "DVD" trash.

It's probably just marketing BS but apparently people have been barfing while watching it.
