Just got my UHD/BD combo of Tenet. It's my week to work the late/split shift, though, and my weekend to work Saturday. So...I may have to wait a bit on this one. Turned 44 yesterday. Gawtdamn that's feeling old.

We all watched Midnight Sky, sort of. The good thing was my kids could see it too. My wife also, if she would have stayed awake.
Long movie, but I think it was okay. Some won't like the ending though.
Shall we talk about Dune, and how rubbish it is?
Oh yeah? So bad you had to post it twice huh?
Can you be specific? I haven't seen it yet but was planning on making it my first theatre going experience since the pandemic started. Dammit.
I think that was just a glitch in my Wi-Fi.
To be fair, most of the response (critical and Regular Joe) has been pretty positive, so maybe you'll like it. And I don't like the director and I thought Arrival and Bladerunner 2049 were crap as well, so it was always going to be a hard sell.
In a nutshell, even though the thing is 150 minutes long and is only half of the book, they cut out basically everything that made Dune so rich, from the world building to the characters. Everything is rushed, nothing is explained properly, loads of important concepts are completely left out and none of the characters have any depth (and they were pretty thin even in the original book). Instead we are given two and a half hours of very impressive set design and slick cinematography. Lots of big visuals with absolutely no content to them.
And with the content that does survive, I disagree with so much about how it's presented. Denis Villeneuve is obsessed with grand, slightly sinister imagery that is supposed to be awe-inspiring and strange, but is completely detached from the human level of the story. Like, the Atreides are the good guys and Caladan is supposed to be a beautiful verdant world in opposition to the brutal conditions of Arrakis, right? So why in this film do the Atreides live in some dark, rainy gothic castle on top of a windswept mountain? I half expected them to have an undead butler. And these are supposed to be the heroes! Yeah, it probably looked fantastic in some concept artist's portfolio, but it's completely wrong for the story.
I always thought Dune the novel was a vividly realised universe but a bit of a cold read, with thinly sketched characters and a lack of emotion. I didn't have high hopes for an adaptation because Dune just has too much world building to do in movie form, but I thought a film version with good actors could at least bring some humanity to the character level of the story. Instead, the film has actually made me appreciate the characterisation in the book more, because there's so fucking little of it on screen.
Well fuck. At least I have the other two realizations on DVD that I quite enjoy lol.
It saddens me that Dune may be bad.
Yeah. I had such high hopes last year for this. :/
Hey, judge for yourselves. Like I said, plenty of people online seem to have liked it. I was bored senseless.
The new Dune wasn't bad but it wasn't awesome (as I was hoping for). I'm a little biased because I like the 80's version with Sting, Jean Luc Picard and the guy from Quantum Leap. I also preferred the fighting scenes when they turned on their shields in the first/original as well. I remember watching it as a kid and thinking "how cool" it would have been to have my own shield!
If this new version of Dune was my first experience, I would have thought it might have been good.

Oscars tonight and I hope Dune gets nothing. It was boring as fuck and Jack was right. I watched it twice this past week just to be sure. Way too heavy on the attention to atmosphere and mood, and it wasn't the right atmosphere or mood. Lol.

Technical awards, fair enough. Happy it did not take screenplay (further, DIRECTOR) since that's where the film shit the bed the most.
I did love Power of the Dog and am glad Campion won director. Imo could have taken cinematography, I certainly was rooting for it.
Fuck Dune!!
I was really expecting total disappointment with Dune, having grown up with the OG 80s film. But, although the pacing was somewhat glacial, I actually enjoyed it. I think it breaks at the appropriate place. This may be unpopular, but I'm looking forward to the conclusion. Visually speaking...we've come a long way since the old 480i days. Watching this in 4K/UHD and HDR at home is fabulous.
Started a free trial of shudder last week. Cancelled after time was up and they extended the free trial to a month(my girlfriend *claims*). Not too many good horror films, although there were a few that were decent. Watched so many that I cant remember the names. The wailing was a good one but Ive seen it before on another streaming service. Wasnt scary. Girlfriend hated it I thought it was great
If you like over the top Bond like action than The Gray Man (Netflix) is a nice one to watch.
It's Netflix's most expensive movie till now.

re-reading (almost done now) all of tolkien's major works in preparation for the new amazon series.. discovered they only have the rights to LOTR and appendices and nothing from silmarillion, unfinished tales, history of middle earth, so i re read a lot more than necessary. trailer has me more worried than excited. major characters in trailer don't seem recognizable. don't think i can separate source material from show (not much source material to go on though). bahhhhh
new game of thrones show is ok but can no longer be invested in the series be it book or show
matrix 4 sucks
i know jurassic world will suck but i must watch it anyway.
has anyone watched 'everything everywhere all at once?' it's been on my to watch list for a while and i've heard many good things
edit: also looking forward to glass onion (hopefully tickets available for TIFF for this film)
