DJ Icey returns to SF to end winter early at the 6th annual Icebreakers Ball
The All-White dress-up get-down affair raises money for the Janky Barge and features Djs from the Janky Barge, TRBL, Fringe Arts Collective, Opulent Temple and the Space Cowboys

Known as the King of the Funky Breaks, Orlando native, DJ Icey, began his spinning career with a residency at the now defunct club, the Edge. Thought to be one of the hardest working DJs in America, Iceys nonstop touring ethic gave him plenty of time to pioneer funky breaks and launch his remix-producer career. He also made history by convincing the then unknown Chemical Brothers to play their first U.S. show on July 4th, 1993, at the Edge. Sometimes packed with breakdancers, B-boys, Ravers, Club Kids, Suburban and even Inner-city kids, the dance floor is always an eclectic group, brought together by Iceys unique breaks. With the release of his Essential Mix mixed by DJ ICEY, on his own label, Zone Records, Icey follows in the footsteps of dj greats such as Pete Tong, Fatboy Slim, and Paul Oakenfold.

Thought I'd ask this here instead of starting a new thread:

Dear SF people,

Since J. Phlip is apparently based in SF, does she have a residency and/or spin often up there? If so, which club?

Thanks,

- An out-of-the-loop LA resident.

Does Dirtybird have a lot of SF artists? I freakin' love their releases. The Martin Brothers, in particular.

Sorry, I'm new to tech/minimal, so I don't know a lot about the scene.

Dirtybird started in San Francisco, so I imagine so!

Here's a little background on db....

quote:

http://www.beatportal.com/labels/dirtybird/

dirtybird released its first record in Janaury 2005 but the idea began in 2002 during the production of Intellect, one of the most intensive studies on DJs and producers of house and techno music ever filmed. The Intellect dvd featured over 40 interviews with legendary producers from Juan Atkins, to Swayzak. Director Barclay Crenshaw created the concept of the label in order to supply tracks for the dvd soundtrack. In 2003, Barclays friend Christian Martin purchased a massive portable sound system and began throwing outdoor parties in San Francisco called dirtybird. The bird logo was derived from a sketch cartoon character Barclay had been drawing since he was 10 years old.

In 2005, dirtybird, the record label began releasing vinyl. At the same time, Barclay created the DJ alias Claude VonStroke as a joke but the name stuck forever after the debut record Deep Throat sold through more than 11,000 vinyl copies worldwide.

Since that time both the label and the dirtybird party have enjoyed great success. Some classic records released by dirtybird include Deep Throat, Stoopit, Whos Afraid of Detroit?, and The Whistler. Artists on the label are mostly from San Francisco (like Justin Martin, Worthy, and Claude VonStroke) but recently some internationals have been popping up as well (like Catz n Dogz and Style of Eye.)

They used to be a monthly before they moved to mezzanine I think. Now its 4 times a year, plus their park shindigs.

Damn, there's no way I can make it up there tomorrow.

You'd think these events would be posted here on the forum. :/

Oh well, hopefully I'll be able to catch the next one.

theres a ridiculous amount of stuff in SF which never makes it to TA. I get most of my event info via facebook these days (although admittedly theres a ton of spam as well).

they also had a party during the non lovEvolution weekend which didnt really get any mention on TA. sfedm and sfstation are other resources.

their parties at golden gate park have a vibe that is unmatched! last one I went to capped off an epic SF birthday weekend(dj dan at ruby, robbie rivera at 1015 on my bday, then dirtybird at the park!)

I would imagine another park party come april.

An outdoor party sounds awesome!

Thanks for the advice guys. I have a friend in Nob Hill and my 'rents are in Napa, so I see a lot of Bay Area visits in my future.
