Extremely territorial, if you where to let it run around outside, he'll basically kill and beat the crap out every other cat, stupid dogs, bird and small furry animal within about a 2km radius from your house. They're also probably smarter than most of their owners.

Yeah that's what i heard... i watched a few videos of people with domesticated ones too. Crazy. They seem awesome but i would bet people would be too intimidated to come inside my house with one. Plus even if i got one as a kitten, once it grew my little female cat would be terrified. I'd be afraid of coming home one day only to find a ball of fur where she used to be. I wonder- would they be ok around smaller cats if properly domesticated and socialized from birth?

They're a 30-35lb solitary apex predator, I wouldn't want one and I adore cats.
Few generations of domestication and they might be ok, but still, with all cats you just don't quite know how it will react if it gets stressed or cranky and they are big enough to open you up like a gutted fish.

there's the rub... they might be able to be 'socialised', but you cant entirely remove nature, and you wouldn't wanna be there the time they were pushed too far accidentally

which sucks cause i would love a big cat at my place..

Have you guys ever heard of an Ashera? It's a cross between a Serval, Asian Leopard, and house cat. They cost between $22,000 - $28,000, ridiculous. They call it the most expensive cat in the world.

Nothing special imo

/\

Yeah that whole thing is being perpetuated by scam artists, originally marketed by a breeder already convicted of fraud, selling off F2 Savannah's as some "new even more exotic breed". It was exposed a couple years ago:

Good story here detailing the scam---> http://llewtrah.blogspot.com/2008/0...en-murkier.html

And this basically sums up the situation:

quote:
Reading the original press release about the Ashera simply shouted "There's one born every minute" and "A fool and his money are readily parted". A special kitty descended from the African Serval and Asian Leopard cat and the domestic cat and they want to charge folk $22,000? This cat already exists, it is called the Savannah cat and was first accepted for registration by The International Cat Association (TICA), the world's largest genetic registry of pedigreed cats, way back in the year 2000.

From the looks of the pictures attached to this press release, the Ashera they are peddling for $22,000 appears to be an F2 generation Savannah cat (two generations removed from the Serval) which would normally cost $3,500 to ~$5,000 from a reputable cat breeder, depending on quality.

Since the original launching of the Ashera cat, the story has changed a little. This current idea is that this cat melds domestic cat with both African Serval and Asian Leopard Cat lineage. ANY cat with African Serval heritage and domestic cat heritage is a Savannah cat. Period. Asian Leopard Cat heritage is a fancy way of saying that they used Bengal cats (the domestic hybrid descended from Asian Leopard Cats, registered for over 20 years with TICA) to cross to the African Serval, something that has already occurred in the Savannah breed, and the vast majority of Savannahs registered have some Asian Leopard Cat in their heritage.

By keeping all information about the Ashera cat confidential, this means that the purchaser of an Ashera cat is buying a cat lacking a pedigree, which is the thing that normally means a cat is worth more money than a shelter kitty. The pictures supplied of the Ashera cat appear to show an inferior-quality Savannah, and the lack of a pedigree or registration papers backs up that impression.

Hahahaha!!! Suckers! I'd be so pissed if I spent all that money just for a Savannah.

No joke... especially when that cost is more than an actual first generation, higher quality one. The linked article talks about a couple from Holland that paid $40,000 for one.

haha... yes, it is Kevin. Uhhh, from what I've read they are around $4000 on average in the U.S. for a kitten; they aren't hard to breed because they aren't a hybrid. The hard part is actually finding one. I searched endlessly for breeders yesterday and what I gathered is you just gotta have the right person put you in touch with an exotic or big cat breeder who might know someone who has Caracals. Check out this crazy shit!

Wow that is insane.

Actually I wouldn't mind owning one. No one would fuck with you with a beast like that.

Yeh, instead of a beware of dog sign, you'll have beware of big cat that would love to slice your jugular, and drink the blood spewing from your neck like a water fountain.
