thanks for your comments m8

sounds good to me, nice mix, nice and loud, solid groove. sounds very "analogue"

kick and bass working nice IMO.

sorry im always saying the same thing, but id lose the vocals they just dont quite fit the vibe imo and sound a bit cheesy in my subjective opinion. i'd look for some vocal samples, maybe from a movie or something, maybe pitch them right down. if you want to keep them id look at pitching them so in key, heavy processing. atm they sound "stuck on" to my ears

not familiar with techno really, but mix seems a little bottom and top heavy you may want to try bring out the mids a bit more, and some more fx stuff happening in the background could be cool

Rich, buddy, it's a nice groove at the start, but then at 0:44 you start doodling with that stab imo

It's an idea

Yes I think so too - the age old 'bloke noodling in a synth shop' problem, lol

Fuck, production is one of the hardest hobbies in the world eh

My mate takes time out of it to do his easy hobby - Astronomy.

Big bassey kicks.......?????

How big, how bassey?

Quite a common feedback comment is that a kick is not big / deep / bassey enough.

People like Joris Voorn say many tracks sound bad in the club as the kick is over-powering.

I often try and keep my kicks quite tame with this in mind but when I post up a WIP here I get the feedback the kick needs to have more low end, and be generally 'bigger'.

So the question is this; When u guys say make the kick bigger with more bottom end, are u mindful this could swamp the track in a club?

I notice in the car many tracks have too much kick and it sort of renders the bassline a bit undefined and hard to pick out.

Personally, I think it comes down to personal preference.
Check this vid out of Joel and Steve Duda. They address some of these issues. (around the 2:10 mark)

Sounds nice! I think the vocal could be a couple db quiter though. Not a fan of the LFO wubs personally, you already had a perfectly nice Garage track going!

Mix sounds too clinical in the highend and the transients up there are a bit harsh. I think you cut a bit too much from the kick's lowend.

New one from me. Dunno why exactly but it gives me a bit of that lovely shitty dutch epic trance feeling

I would agree with Joris Voorn, a lot of club stuff these days is just a wall of sub
I love when the older tracks are played as the kicks sound great, not too subby but plenty of thump, what i try to do is start with a good sounding sample, roll off the low end and boost around 80hz instead

Posted by Woony on Nov-11-2017 12:34:

It's fine to scoop out a bit sub 40hz but a lot of amateur producers (and most professional trance producers LOL) just go waaaay to far until they have a kick with no lowend. Your 'Can U Feel' track is definitely cut too high. The only time I would cut that high is with a really big, meaty, subby distorted bass but yours doesn't even sit that low and is pretty polite. Generally, it's fine to have either the kick or the bass bang in the subs, just not both. And it's fine to have some spillover, a lot of people totally seperate their kick and bass and it just sounds lame and clinical. A lot of older tracks have pretty messy kick/bass mixing and they still sound great in the club.

Keep in mind that any competent mastering engineer is going to cut sub 30 hz pretty heavily anyways. I think the real problem is that a lot of people just make kicks with ridiculously long decay times and a shit ton of reverb and then it'll obviously end up as a mess. Someone who's a mastering engineer listened to the track I posted above and said the kick is fine and it's subby as hell.

A nice solution to roll off the subs that has plenty of character and doesn't sound clinical is U-he Satin (tape emulation). It does wonders do lowend if you set it up right, it naturally rolls off sub 30hz and really makes that ~50hz range bang. It also adds nice harmonic distortion and overtones to bass and pulls everything together with a nice gentle tape compression across the mix.

Nice! I don't know about Dutch trance, but the bass sounds right out of a Markus Schulz set circa 2005. I like it.

Posted by Woony on Nov-11-2017 15:53:

Yeah, I'm a big fan of those reese basslines. They were also somewhat popular among early 2000s techno producers.

I like it. Need some variety or change in sound in some point imo or different arrangement. Sound is nice, bass is awesome. Pads are nice too.

bassline sounds really cool - some of the stabs are a bit on the loud/harsh side, definitely potential there

@woony, nice track there

i really like it - the drop could be better, wanted the track to really take off at that point, second one is better, if you had a little vocal to round off the phrase that would be perfect (if that makes sense)

i think you have all the bits there, just a matter of arrangement

also the sub is quite heavy, you could probably lose a bit of that, its just eating up headroom

Useful Evo thx

I cannot embed SC just now ,no idea why not

Here's one of those tech wips I promised to finish, nearly there.

May be worth continuing:

Recording of walking the dog, put through a vocoder with volume and decay automation. The last part is the plain synth without any vocoding or effects:

No idea what I'll do with it yet but I like the sound.
