Play with spreading this vocal slightly of the center - maybe even move them (occasionally or even some vocal fx or chops) from the left to the right with some increase reverb decay time. This whole this is about adding some excitement and movement to your vocal - just mu $0.04.

thanks for the points!! going to re do this one to try and get it more pro sounding

It was a long time ago since I was working on Trance track and probably lost some edge lol but I tried (just short WIP):

DariusX.Concept 11DEC2020

Hey D...yea, I feel ya about the edge and I haven't done any trance in so long. At any rate...I like this track, more so when the percussion starts kicking in as it takes on a whole new vibe.
The start of this track as an odd feel to it as it didn't get a real trancy vibe, perhaps because I already had it in my head that this was a Trance track and had a different expectation.
Production, as always is top notch and sounds really full.

-----------------------------------

So, I made it out of Las Vegas after 22 years. Practically left it all behind and re relocated back to Washington state after 26 years.
I am starting it all off with new everything. New rig, Monitors and more importantly a space where I can actually do production (although it will need treatments but at least I CAN do that now).
So, after 9 months off of doing nothing musically, I sat down over the weekend and started working on these : (no mix,WIP)
Hope all have been well and having a Happy Holiday

........ back to Washington state after 26 years....... - what part of Washington State? I'm in Seattle so there is a chance lol

As far as your tracks - I really like "TEST" has some nice dynamics and energy in it. Melody is sweet and sound choices are spot on with good mixing and levels. Some addition of classic guitar sound make this track even more attractive - smooth going Phil.

Port Townsend is an awesome place to leave in Washington state man - you definitely hit me up when you are around Seattle area man.

Hope holidays have been good for you .

Great stereo image on this. Overall balance seems a bit off - the beat is all the way on the background. That is really the biggest fix needed on this one. All in all a nice vibe, especially when the trumpet joins.

---------------

For me;
I'm still working on the same house stuff. Really happy with the middle part, not yet with how well it transitions back to the piano house stuff. Not sure how to proceed.

Secondly hoping this will be an oldschool thing to finish at some point...

Posted by Storyteller on Dec-29-2021 06:53:

Note to self to lower kick volume significantly on the no bounds clip. (Headphone mix)

Edit: I think I fixed it... Although I need to make the bass less deep to translate to speakers properly.

This will correlate well with the upcoming sister site - HOUSEADDICT.com =OP

I think in your notes to self Story pretty much is the reaction I got to it as well. Smooth as hell though
The Detroit Track wasn't my cup of tea however, the production value is quite high on this piece. I was wondering how you would trans from the breakdown and you did it quite nice for such a time signature change. Nice work indeed

------------------------------------------

This...is ALL over the board as it is chunks from 10 different ideas all thrown together and I need to work it all out. Pretty much a rough cut that seems to have a progressive house/eric prydz kinda feel. Think I am going to keep working it
No mix (sorry...you guys always put up what seems to be polished tracks...jeez have a heart for those still getting used to their gear lol) and I am unsure of the composition....might need to re work the intro.
Sub to mids seem ..ok?

Both of those WIP-s, Matt, are in different styles, but they both have a nice flow to them. As far as your kick, I wouldn't change the volume too much as it personally doesn't bother me that much. Coming in and out of the break in "Detroit Vanilla" could be slightly more dramatic/attractive but overall melodic development is really sweet (House-Funk or I-Funk are my prefer styles beside of course Lounge/chillout). Well done so far man.

storytellers productions so good quality, congrats on stepping it up. 2nd one reminds me of evo8's stuff.

im no longer using reason and im using a trial of ableton, same old story though, bad mix bad musicianship; its wierd being stuck in what feels like mud the majority of your life but then you grasp the realization of it all. Does it come down to your DNA/Genes? is it a mental choice is it environment? a combination of the three? same can be said about everything in life if you ponder hard enough.

anyhoo, happy new years glad u guys r still alive.

Hi Phil,

This one is tough to comment on as I can't put my fingers around it. I would start with looking into a dynamics area of this production and make sure that drums and bass can drive this WIP with nice eq separation and proper levels set. Also I will try to create something (some instrument/sound) which would glue this melodic development and give something to unwind/evolve around it. Nice idea but need to be put together slightly different way Phil - just my 0.02$ and please ignore this if you disagree.

Cheers,

Darek T/a DariusX

You too bud. Take care and all the best for 2022.

Short reply as I'll be out the next days. Please keep up the clip (both msz and systematic) if you want. That way I can give you my 2 cents next year.

It's all of the above you mentioned. For me lots changed last since 2016 with kids and selling most music stuff I had in 2018. Father had a stroke and sustained partial loss of movement capabilities a year ago. I prevented myself from burnout Q2 this year. Visiting psychologist still although that might be ending soon. I've not always been great but am in a fortunate position where I can get help or create circumstances under which I can recover. I switched clients as consultant few times to realize I needed to switch employer entirely. Only the last 2 yrs I've slowly been ramping up music production. Bought a great headset (B&W PX7) early on in Covid times which serves me well. Brought out my big gun dynaudio speakers again 2 months ago which I had been hiding the past 3 yrs.

Music wise a few things besides headphones amd speakers: switching to Ableton 10 (cytomic the glue came with it, awesome drum bus compression). Grabbing super cheap producer bundles from Ghosthack. Getting free license of my neighbor on Pianoteq (rhodes & piano). Buying a 2 octave midi keyboard 2nd hand from same neighbor which is a significant downgrade from the previously owned Access Virus KC I can tell you, but it works well . Buying cheap Ozone (eq & master limiter only I think) has helped a bunch.

Also a few Sol State videos on youtube in which they decompose some Disclosure tracks have been helpful. Some really neat production tricks in there without all the bloat. In 15 min you learn 5 new things at least.

That said, now that you're on Ableton too. Is it Ableton 10? Want to collab? I'm slow, but down for it.

@Darek: thanks! You've touched on my main point of concern. Not yet sure what to do there. It is closed to being done which is cool though. It really feels like I'm incrementally improving lately in quality and creativity. Great feeling to have which I've missed for many years.

ALWAYS desire your input D....and no, you are correct. At the same time, this track is a garbled mess without a doubt and practically thrown in the DAW. I made no effort for "tonality" and if anything was attempting to showcase the "idea" (as I usually do)

Posted by szm on Dec-31-2021 21:57:

good to hear you're doing positive things ST, I can totally hear it in your wip. Im using the ableton 11 trial atm(the bass and pads in that wip are using the wavetable instrument). I really have no clue what im doing with ableton in terms of performance, grouping or even how to use the reverbs and delay properly, just sidechaining my way to the finishing line. im not sure what Im going to settle on, I will see in the upcoming months. I honestly havent been making any music, work has me exhausted and yea im extremely depressed rn. I would love to collab in the future (although I have not had much success in doing this in the past) but I will have to do some work on myself. Bringing back some nostalgia popping back in. Wish you guys well, cheers.

btw Izotope trash 2 is free (lmtd time?)

1st clip is really enjoyable! I like the melody and vibe you've got going here. The low end is fighting between bass and kick. There's this high string which could be a little bit louder if you ask me. I enjoy how the sounds keep moving the whole time. Apart from the low end stereo bass and kick the separation is great!

2nd clip is okay but I prefer #1 by far. The bass needs dampening and the beats could be a bit more upfront. Not sure what else to add on this one in comments.

Nice tension starting in the beginning. Bit of an oldschool ibiza vibe. Honestly if the drum section is polished this and maybe a bit more sophisticated synth instead of the one on top of the piano now and you have a great piece. Conceptually you've nailed it if you ask me. Very enjoyable. It's all chosing the sounds now to sell it well.

-------------

Did some minor updates on this. Still need to fix the too deep bassline. It needs overtones or something similar to come across well on speakers, it's just too deep. Would work well on big installations already I presume. Extremely happy with the second time the pads come into play, hence me sharing it again although it hardly changed. This is the first time I created an enjoyable piano roll. Took me almost 26yrs to get here apparently but I'm enjoying it which is all that matters.

Thanks for that ST! Yea, I have been re working this track and the more I do, the more I am liking it. As mentioned, all the layers were practically thrown in but will present when it gets more polished.

Ok, so your No Bounds WIP.
A few questions with this. I fired this up loud,on purpose. Granted, it was done in a 9x10 room with absolutely no treatment. Now then...
When this piece initially hit, I got a ton of distortion bouncing off the walls from that kick and there is this little shaker/knocker that sounds like a ringing "brush" (if you will) that really rattled the innards of the room.
With that said however, at the :35 mark it starts changing the dynamics in the room and envelops more as it progresses through till the kick hits back at :48 mark and then all of a sudden, it just blooms. I cannot explain it and you would have to hear it for yourself but the best way I can describe it is that it simply just seems more "developed" in tonality and very smooth with no rattling at all in the room.
now, not sure if this was the feedback you were looking for however, I can definitely notice a change in the "dynamics" of the sub/kick.
Composition is on the money and the arrangement is what I have come to expect in your tracks which is very fluid, full tones.

Pretty cool take on D&B Chillout with Cory Friesenhan vox Phil. Really like how clean and well arrange this WIP is with nice sound separation and dynamics - not sure if I would add anything to it at point as this style is not my favorited lol but sounds quite good!

I was quiet for a few weeks as my production system finally gives up on me lol. It took me few good days to reload all of those applications and upgrade them to latest available version. Currently I have been working on couple of new tracks mostly in Electronics genre and was just wondering how everything seats together as I need to calibrate my entire system (applications and my ears for it lol).

Cheers,
