At my uncle/godfather's house in Austria:

He's a big-time hunter, obviously. There must be over 150 goat and deer heads throughout the house, as well as some bigger game. 60+ fox pelts, 20+ badger pelts, quite a few stuffed foxes and martens, a couple sweet looking birds (I'm sorry Stu! He's loves 'em as much as you do, though) and even some crazy shit he hunted in Africa, like the tusks of a wild boar!

As much as he enjoys hunting, it's a sustenance thing as well - he used to operate a restaurant, so he eats what he kills (well, the deer at least). Last night he cooked us some schnitzel from pork (which is typical for this region I think, whereas wiener schnitzel is veal) and from deer as well. The deer schnitzel was a bit gamier, but so delicious. He made some incredibly good potato salad and a soup that I can't recall the name of (it had sliced up pancakes in it) as well. In Vienna I'll be at some really well known/famous/historic restaurants but I can't imagine that I'll have a meal half as good as that one was.

I'll probably upload a couple more pics from the trip when I'm back home in 10 days or so.

The Van Poopy Pants thing makes sense when you put it into the context of children.

IGK would probably say that his whole life makes sense when you put it into the context of children.

But yeah, acute observation. "Hey kids! My name's Van Poopy Pants! How about we take a ride in my mother's car?"

Man, I don't understand the point of hunting at all.

Except for, like, people in pre-industrial/developing nations and shit, obviously.

Yeah, I love my family. Going to shoot 'em and stuff 'em next week.

Yes, but its not the same thing obviously.

Hunting satisfies a primal urge. Its challenging (most of the time). It requires honing a skill.

There are lots of reasons beyond those as well.

Are they valid reasons from a moral/ethical standpoint? I don't really know.

It's a totally different culture...don't know what else to tell you. I generally side against hunting but in this case I don't really see a whole lot wrong with it. My uncle can identify any bird, animal, tree, or flower that he sees. He loves nature. If he kills a few things and eats them and then kills a few other things to display in his house and marvel at their beauty than good for him.

I, personally, would never want to shoot a gun, be it at a range or in the wild, but...well, I eat veal. Who am I to judge. Let's leave it at that.

So does rape.

You really are an idiot.

Despite my love of nature and animals, I don't really have a problem with hunting, as long as the hunters eat what they kill.

Animals taste delicious, and I'd be a massive hypocrite to suggest otherwise.

Hunting for fun or sport though - It's basically just making a person feel powerful, and more than likely offsetting how piss-weak they are in day-to-day life.

IMO

I meant it tongue in cheek

Sort of like fishing really. I'm sure it's fun and if you can get a nice meal out of it, so be it. It can also be done to cull animals when there are too many out in the wild, such as with boars and recently kangaroos.

I don't think rape would really satisfy a "primal urge." It seems like rape is almost always a display of dominance rather than an urge to reproduce. In that way it's pretty similar to murder. I think it's more of a "I have your life in my hands right now" thing rather than a "Make my baby!" thing.

I've never hunted before, and I probably won't ever hunt, but I can understand why some people do. A lot of times it's something that people grow up with too. Their grandfathers hunt, their fathers hunt, etc.

I do, however, think it's bullshit to say "Oh, it's okay. I love deer." I don't tend to kill things that I love. Like "aww, look at that deer over there. He's so majestic. I just want to put a bullet right between his pretty little eyes!" You don't hunt because you love the animal. You hunt because you want to kill something and laws prevent you from killing other people.

Now if they made hunting people legal, I would totally get down on that.

Not necessarily. The bigger animals provide a lot of meat, and can last you a long time if you freeze the carcass. There are the costs of a gun and license, too, but those can end up paying for themselves eventually, if you shoot enough / big enough animals.

The meat you get may be healthier for you, too (lower in saturated fat and cholesterol).

Killing animals is wrong.

how is a lust for dominance not a primal urge?

btw, all those animal heads are disgusting. i'm not personally a fan of hunting, but i don't really have a problem with it when it is for sustenance or gourmand/wild food purposes... but the trophy hunting thing is just sick. and to collect hundreds of body parts like that is like serial killer psychopath territory IMO

Lust for dominance might be a primal urge, but rape isn't. Hunting was necessary for survival, rape wasn't. I think of primal urges as things that were once necessary for survival and nothing more. I don't think humans evolved with an innate desire to rape one another. The "rape," as we think about it today, is probably just the evolution of forced mating. The underlying urge was to reproduce, not just to dominate.
