I remember seeing NIN, then crystal method in the same night. That guy wore his starf*cker shirt to their show. Rage, Hal?

No, it makes sense. Starfcukers is one of the worst NIN songs there is - I'm sure it was Crystal Method guy's favourite.

They sound quite a lot alike: massive breakbeats, hip-hop samples, acid lines etc.

I'm sure they've produced a lot of shite (which big-beat act hasn't?) but I don't know how anyone can resist tracks like Keep Hope Alive and Busy Child. I never like it when people defend music as being "fun", but I've never heard anything more fun to dance to than big-beat.

Posted by Halcyon+On+On on Aug-19-2011 01:51:

I don't like the Chemical Brothers much, either. But I don't tend to like 'tracks'. This vein of music is notorious for just slapping a bunch of singles together to make an album, and I find it all quite disjointed. It's seemingly reserved for people who like to merely compile saccharine playlists in winamp, or movie moguls looking to pluck a fitting Club Scene Track out of whatever kids must listen to these days.

Posted by SYSTEM-J on Aug-19-2011 02:27:

Big-beat is strange like that, because it was made and marketed to a rockist crowd so it did revolve around artist albums and tracks that are self-contained units. Big-beat tracks rarely come with DJ-friendly intro/outros or any kind of unified tempo range, for example. But yes, it is (mostly) looped-based stuff, particularly the clubby Chemical Brothers/Crystal Method stuff. And yeah, most of these albums are packed with filler that is noticeably worse than any of the hit singles.

For me, the best place to hear big-beat is still in a DJ set. When someone is just putting all the killer together one after another it's massive fun, or when someone drops a few big-beat tracks into an eclectic party set.

Clearly the ears I've seen in your pics are prosthetic.

Not big-beat, but this gets better and better every time I hear it:

I genuinely think that's one of his best productions, if not the best. Such a perfect example of how to do a remix.

With a higher pitch, this track becomes such a banger.

Not really. They come from very distinct traditions: The Chemical Brothers are much more "rock music" oriented, being influenced by the Madchester movement - it's no coincidence that Gallagher guy is in so many tracks. There are also guitar riffs and bass slapping all over their first albums. The Crystal Method came out of the "Acid Breaks" fever that took over the American West Coast in the early 90's - Überzone sounds a lot more like the Crystal Method than the Chemical Brothers, as it's much more "dancefloor" oriented... if you add a 4/4 beat on top of Comin' Back, it becomes just another trance track. Their later work perhaps converged as big beat became a more coherent movement... but their early stuff sounds nothing alike.

Besides, the Chemical Brothers apparently sampled my voice without my permission when I was a teen. I loved it

I don't know what I'm saying though. Pop the house center?

Because people who use that as a defense are pathetic. "Don't you dare critique my music - it's fun!"

Like it if you like it, but don't compare it to headier, more thought-out work if all you're bringing to the table is the justification that you once had a good time while listening to it really loud.

They both hail from a breakbeat tradition, the hip-hop family tree, with influences from acid house. Yeah, the Chems are influenced by UK indie music, but they didn't start out playing in guitar bands and they don't compose songs like a band. We're talking about their early material, pre-Crystal Method here. Their work is heavily sample-based, loop-oriented, built from the bottom up. They named themselves the Dust Brother, fer'chrissake. Using a guitar instead of a synth does not mean you can say they sound nothing alike.

And as for the Chemical Brothers not being very dancefloor oriented... I don't even know where to begin there.

I'm all for thought-out art, don't get me wrong. I truly believe Pink Floyd tried to work on their inspiration and do something imaginative and unique. However, let's face it, would you ever choose Pink Floyd over Scooter?

I know I wouldn't. Experimental music should serve no function other than open new paths for what really matters: fun music

Maybe I exaggerated when I said they sound nothing alike, but saying the Crystal Method ripped the Chemical Brothers off is not any less exaggerated.

Huh!? I never said that!

Posted by Halcyon+On+On on Aug-19-2011 04:09:

You think Pink Floyd is experimental? Maybe Piper At The Gates of Dawn could qualify, but in that time frame it hardly counts. That album was experimental in the same way looking at what your partner was doing in Chemistry class is experimental.

Nah. It was the first "serious" band I could think of... lacked the arsedness to think of a better example

It's hard to maintain a serious argument AND listen to Scooter at the same time. As a matter of fact, I'd better leave before this does become a serious argument that I entered simply because I thought someone exaggerated and I decided to play the same game.

Posted by Halcyon+On+On on Aug-19-2011 04:18:

Oh, so now you're saying Pink Floyd isn't serious??? What the fuck?!?!
