La Trobe is ok. There's several uni's in Melbourne and most of them have a pretty good rep.

La Trobe is maybe 3rd or 4th ranked in Melbourne but a fair step behind the top two. Its probably in the fat part of the curve of Australian uni's.

Basically the top uni's in Australia are ANU, Melbourne, Sydney, NSW, UQ and Monash - 2 of those are in Melbourne.

If you're looking at Cairns you're talking about JCU, its probably one of the best regional universities, but its still not great. Plus, Cairns. Lovely to visit, not sure I'd want to live there.

The thing about uni's in Australia is that the actual uni you go to doesn't matter that much, I don't think people really care too much about where people get their qualifications. And overseas, well most people wouldn't know the difference between Charles Darwin and Uni Sydney, nevermind La Trobe and Melbourne.

I used to be with Optus for a few years but their 3G coverage and service is poor. Phone reception wasn't bad but if you wanted fast 3G internet it was shocking.

I switched to Telstra and couldn't be happier myself. Worth the extra $.

Yes, I confirm I said that. The guys from Pendulum are a close second.

wtf, completely missed you asking about unis!!

Unis are really specialised in Melbourne I think-- Latrobe is where I go, has brilliant humanities departments- From experience, and talking with others its got probably the best philosophy/politics/history etc, and from first hand experience these 3 are brilliant here... didn't do linguistics though, sorry!

Swinburne has good science, monash good business, RMIT has arts, but they pretty much suck at everything else..

Melbourne is top-ranked, and it does have the broadest range (they have the most cash by FAR, so have a good staff, and HUGE departments in all areas), but the reason I didn't go there, is that they've started fucking with the structure, and altering degree qualifications... They're basically trying to model it on the American system now, which has made getting a degree pretty messy, since neither the staff, nor students really know wtf is going on most of the time... It has been about 5-6 years since they changed it though, so it might be getting better now, but this year they also didn't reach the applications quota (for the first time ever, or at least the first time in a long time )...
cor version: Melbourne university's going down-hill, at least at undergrad level...

what ben said is right though-- most (read: Nearly all) international students who can will go to Melbourne (if in victoria)-- I think this is as much just because it's called "The University of Melbourne", and therefore looks good as any other reason though

Posted by Trance Nutter on May-08-2011 08:24:

RMIT is quite good for engineering and materials science too.

Monash is all-round good.

La Trobe isn't a bad university, and that is what is important. If you're thinking of staying in Australia afterwards, I don't think the actual university you have gone to doesn't matter very much, people don't seem to place much emphasis on the actual institution.

If you go back overseas, apart from a couple of the more recognisable top 6 uni's, people won't really know the difference between La Trobe and most of the other uni's (especially breaking it down to a departmental level). Australia's uni system has a pretty good reputation overseas generally and thats what is mainly going to matter.

Posted by Fledz on May-08-2011 08:51:

Yep, both Melbourne and Sydney have a bunch of good universities and there are a few more scattered around the other major cities too.
The uni you go to essentially means shit all in this country as they all tend to have a decent reputation, both locally and overseas.

Having said that though, UTS ftw!

This video from 1990 made me laugh, but also made me sad. Can you imagine anything like this being broadcast on Australian television these days? I feel like TV was more experimental pre-2000.

Yeah, sorry. You're right, it says late '90s. Their clothes look like they're from 1990 though.

I remember sitting in the audience for the filming of one Recovery episode back in about '98. I couldn't get over how small and cramped the sets were, certainly didn't come off looking that way on tv.
One of the bands I used to play with supported Dylan's band, The Brown Hornet back around that time, got so stoned with them. haha
I miss that show too.

yeah, SHH took a bit to warm up too though imo- I reckon it's got potential, and half the characters havn't even been introduced yet... Looks like he's really going to ride the racism joke into the ground by the end of it though, since that's pretty much the pull of the other characters (asian mother, and american rapper)...

just saying fuck, or abo every 2 seconds isn't gonna be funny for more than 1 episode...
