Short little electro tune I've been working on...haven't been in the mood for any serious trance undertakings lately...

I think what it lacks in substance it made up for in fun. Might add a little more to the "melody/chorus" and still fine tuning the mix. (It originally was done on headphones and a laptop)

The sub-bomb on my 750W Hi-fi sub sure is sick though...

Comments/crits welcome.

Enjoy!

main issue for me is that the kick has no thump whatsoever

i would add some fullness for the lead maybe layer it or have a blippy type synth sound counter melody weaved in.

hmm after getting to 2 mins it takes off it seems to me you take to long to open the tune up for that style its usaly just intro|small break|Main segment 1|Breakdown|drop|small break| re drop|outro|

pretty much have it bounce in from the first segment

as i have no monitors can some one tell me if it sounds bad please

its sounds a bit nasaly - the bassline isnt really standing out at all, maybe dont cut so much from it
its hard to mix low end on headphones

Cheers for the feedback.

@Oaken : Yeah I'll be adding a little more interest to it. Going to be difficult to fit anymore in tho. As for structure, I kinda like the way it's laid out, as I'm not trying to straight up copy any specific genre.

@ evo : Will consult with my reference sub and make the adjustments.

The thing I've been finding is that with monitors / headphones, sometimes bass levels that sound "good" on those mediums get a bit out of hand on larger systems so I've been nipping the bass freq. a little.

i use a rocker chair and have my stuff on a long sideboard still its a little to big

i have only been doing this for a few months and mixing/mastering seems to need alot of work

the problem ios it sound right on head phones but on my 2 18"cab units the bass is either gone or to much... not to mention the mrs wants to punch my face in when i use them..

be careful using a sub to check that kick - can give the impression of a big kick if you have a lot of sub in the kick
the thump/power in kicks comes from the low mid area, like 80hz upwards
have made that mistake many times

Love how you mix your drums they always sound good!

Yeh, completely understand. Was a misconception of mine for awhile.

Will just run the adjustable crossover and check through the entire low-end range starting at 150hz down.

The sub is a new edition so it's not quite dialed in yet. (Haven't used it much)

-Edit- Was actually a rather novel fix. The HP filter I was using to fade in the kick had it's Q set at 24 and was affecting the rest of the low end even while set at 0hz. Narrowed Q to 6, problem solved.

Updated version :

Also seems like SC sucks a bit of energy out of the tune...but w/e's.

I definitely agree'd with the kick though...Even with my sub crossover rolled off between 150-80hz the kick thumps a bit better.

Made numerous other minor changes...Kinda happy with it now.

Personally, I find most of the kicks to have the "thumping" somewhere as low as 60< hz depending the tightness and dryness of the waweform. I tend to save the 80< hz usually for mono low bass to amp it up just a lil bit more, and still have pretty lenghty sub on kick. Second important area for me is the ~250hz area (its pretty precise). It widens the sub kick nicely, to pack the needed "thumping".

But remember that bad sample is a bad sample and no matter of the processing, you wont get it to sound THAT great. Learnt it the hard way.

These are just personal prefrences offcourse.

In your track it still feels a bit flat and your bass seems to overpower it lil bit. I mean like the sub peak feels like its more powerful on the bass than your kick. If you have no sidechain in the bass i suggest you (maybe?) add one, or if you have check the threshold and A/R.

Composition vise you have some clever portamento/gliding thing going on but over 2:40 mix gets lil messy, when everything is going on at once.

I liked your last one more, but your percs are great. Maybe i'm not just as used to oldschool sounds (especially the kicks), but some sounds seems lil bit out of stock, but i think thats what your aiming for?

----------------

Composition vise its doing okay i guess, but i cant seem to get a grip on the lead. Either its too on the top or too much on the background. I might change it completely. The returns delays on the piano are also lil out of place it seems. AND the bass in the breakdown is single layer, I should prob add more.

Sounding good Domesty.

I really like this. You can hear the bottom and the top line of the bass but it's really lacking some mids. Good mix overall and nice sounds!

I've been trying to get into logic again lately and came up with this, a bit slower than my usual stuff. It needs a vocal or something maybe?

Edit: changed hats

not bad but i dont like the way you drop the hats at the end of each bar, spoils the groove for me

Posted by Andy28 on Aug-19-2014 15:05:

I was toying with it for a while and wasn't sure myself. I'll fix and repost.
Any other issues?

Cheers evo.

Edit: fixed see 1st post

This is quite interesting take on Melodic Trance my friend - like where you going with this track - sound really sweet/nice with some low movement in it - exactly what I like lol

Cheers man,

EDIT: Updated the track, thanks for the feedback guys some really good advice

I like 0:00 to the breakdown, and 3:03 till the end. Everything in between, not my style...

Your mix to me, sounds little too dark. I feel that it's keeping the song from sounding as exciting as it can be. It seems to be more of balance/levels thing rather than bad eq. I would make the kick less in your face like nothing else matters, and give the rest of elements a boost.

Thanks for the comments guys!

Hows the mix sounding on your systems (bass in particular)?

Hey there! LONG LONG time lurker here. Finally decided to sign up and join the community!

Been producing on and off for several years but decided to take it a little more serious this past year. Here's a track I'm currently working on. Has a oldskool trance feel to it but the BPM is slower to fit with today's music. Composition is no where near finished. If anyone could provide honest feedback on the mix and overall idea of the track, that would be awesome. (Be as harsh as you want :whip
